Magnum -- Fully Loaded is an absolute monster for anyone into funk.

Here's amg's review (4.5 stars):

Quote:
The songwriting and innovation barometer may not be as high on this LP as it is on early-'70s discs by Sly & the Family Stone, Parliament-Funkadelic, Miles Davis, and Santana — all of whom Magnum bear slight to strong resemblance to, at one point or another. Yet it's a pretty solid effort, and a reminder of a brief time when black music effectively synthesized R&B with numerous progressive trends while remaining both optimistic and street-smart. The collision of influences makes itself known right from the opening "Evolution," with its celebratory/revolutionary lyrics, solid funk groove, James Brown-like horns, bongos, distorted hard rock guitar riffs, and intricate sailing background harmonies. The dragging beats and druggy ambience of "Your Mind" should recall Sly Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On period to many listeners. The wacky hallucinogenic sex sentiments of "Natural Juices" wouldn't sound too out of place in George Clinton's world, with its spaced-out narration: "some people get off on a needle...then there is a thumb and blanket. But the ultimate pacifier is a warm, wet nipple." "Witch Doctor's Brew" and the more impressive, ten-minute "Composition Seven," by contrast, make much use of Miles Davis-ish jazz-rock fusion keyboards in their groove-oriented, jammy passages, the latter tune boosted by an irresistible Latin beat. The album was entirely overlooked in comparison to the more famous artists mining the same grooves, both when it was made and when such sounds have come back into fashion. And it absolutely demands a hearing by anyone who digs these sorts of combinations, even if the group were not as original as the giants of the genre.

And I like it alot more than they do...I like more than any Sly or Santana album.

I think you're wrong on that because it was voted #12 on the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll of 1974.

Allmusic says 1973. It's also on the acclaimed music list for 74 though. I'm not entirely sure.

I'd put more credence in the Pazz & Jop poll which was actually voted on in 1974.

I was going to list Greivous Angel, but I thought I'd seen it on another poll. Amazon has it listed as '73.

Ha ha. I was sure a fresh faced little kiddie back then.

I used to love that Aerosmith album back then, but it's hard to like much of it now. It kinda plods instead of rocks, and the songwriting is fairly dismal (and the best track, by far, is a cover of "Train Kept A-Rollin'" that blatantly steals the arrangement from Johnny Burnette's Rock and Roll Trio - which, admittedly, didn't matter much to a 14 year old). I also tried to like that Kiss album back then but, Spade Kitty be damned, that thing sucketh major bone.

Some of my faves from that year are:

Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel (which says 1974 on the LP cover, btw)
Ducks Deluxe - s/t
The Raspberries - Starting Over
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next
Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight
Mott the Hoople - The Hoople
Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets

And some of the omissions that need to be mentioned:

Brinsley Schwartz - New Favorites Of...
Eric Burdon Band - Sun Secrets
Foghat - Rock And Roll Outlaws
Harmonium - s/t
Heavy Metal Kids - s/t
Van Morrison - Veedon Fleece
Harry Nilsson - Pussycats
Michel Pagliaro - s/t
Suzi Quatro - Quatro
Rod Stewart - Smiler
The Strawbs - Ghosts
Ron Wood - I've Got My Own Album To Do
Roy Wood's Wizzard - Eddy And The Falcons

My vote goes to the Dolls. Think I had it at #2 on my listmania, and "Human Being" was #1 on my song listmania.

lol. In one of those teenage lapses in taste I actually liked the Kiss debut ("Strutter" and "Deuce" in particular), but Hotter Than Hell lost me. I remember I liked the guitar solo in "Strange Ways", but "Mainline" was toothless pop, "Goin' Blind" was turgid drama, and the rest of it was imminently forgettable. Even then. I disliked it so much that I considered Dressed To Kill their comeback album. Yup, the junior Rads knew his Kiss.

Wow, I've never known anyone to dislike Hotter than Hell if they somewhat liked the debut. Although it might have the worst production in the history of recorded music. You're right about Mainline though. Terrible song. Hotter than Hell is an admitted rip-off of All Right Now, btw. Love Strange Ways, Parasite, Goin' Blind and especially Watchin' You.

I'm not sure how easy/hard it is to find...I know Dusty Groove carries it. I seriously doubt a best buy would.

I know its easy to find online (eg I'm sure Amazon stocks it) and I found it in a used bin at Amoeba not long after I started looking for it.

For some reason, my eyes just glazed over this one on the list of choices. It would be a third choice for me.

I don't like it as much as #1 Record.

I never really liked Big Star until I listened to Third/Sister Lovers, and then I was able to get into the first two albums which I'd already owned for a few years. I still don't consider them one of my favorite bands, but I feel like I finally "get" the love some people have for them.

Jeez, it's been so long since I listened to Love You Live that I forgot it was on there. I'll have to dig it out and give a listen. I remember far preferring the El Mocambo sides, though.

Does that really get that much hype?

I'm a big Gene Clark fan and everything he's done is great but I'd put No Other closer to the bottom of his catalog (including Byrds releases, solo and collaborations with the Dillards) than the top.

Besides this might make a lot of top tens for the year but few top 1 or 2, especially given its year is the same year as On the Beach which would likely appeal to the same group of people.
