The arts/entertainment editor in Austin already knows me, because we had lunch when I was there in October. He likes my work and has no doubt I'd be a great fit there, but they haven't had any openings in that department in 5 years. That's actually a pretty common situation; features jobs are the hardest to get.

I'm leaning toward doing the new gig for a year or two just to bide my time and see if anything opens up at the paper there. I've already got all the money I need saved up since I've been planning a move of some kind for about a year now.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. I'll let you know how things play out.

I'm sure you'll make right decision, Chad, whatever decision that may be. And of course, you'll look cute doing it. :D

Well, at least we got past the first page before OPA! made a pass at some dude. And today that some dude is me, so I guess I should feel flattered.
Thanks Chris.

Forget this signs and omens crap. If the Flint job will bring you significant happiness and/or help your career, take it. If not, Austin.

This wouldn't happen to be Robert Faires from the Chronicle, would it? Or, are you talking about the a/e guy from the Statesman?

If I stay here, definitely since I'll have money to spare.

werd, Austin can wait another year. Getting a crack at the job you want now, can lead to an easier lateral job move when you move to Austin, then you'll have both good job and good city.

if i were you, i'd take the position. like you said, those don't open up very often and, if you don't like it as much as you thought you would, move on. you have a real opportunity to be a tastemaker in your city. while flint probably isn't nearly as cool as austin, try it out and flint might just end up being a cooler city than before.

what a cool job.

The one from the Statesman. Never really given the Chronicle much thought since weeklies rarely pay that well.
You know anyone there?

Not at the Statesman, but I have a few cronies over @ the Chronicle. And they constantly bitch how they hardly earn enough to support their Mexican Martini habit over at Trudy's. The Statesman's a decent read, and I've heard nothing but good things from people who know people who work there, but I couldn't imagine no positions have become available over a five-year period. Unless you mean strictly the A/E dept., which I still couldn't understand. Anyhoo, I'm sure you'll make the right decision. Best of luck to you wherever you go. Oh, and if you want some email addys to some low-lifes at the Chronicle, just yodel.

Dig. I may take you up on that.

I met a bunch of their staffers at a Halloween party when I went down there and they all love it. They have news jobs open up fairly often from what I'm told and since news is what I've done for the last 5 years, I'm sending them clips, resume, etc. to be considered for one of those spots when one opens up.

As for A/E jobs, people hold onto them like grim death. Especially in a city like Austin. Think about it; covering arts and culture in a city that alive and vibrant. Why would you want to leave? As the editor said when we met; "Seems we keep 'em fat and happy here and no one wants to go anywhere else."

Can't say I blame them, but I can also resent them all to hell.

Yeah I was just checking with work about transferring to another Post Office in another state and apparently I'd have to start all over again. Not pay-wise or time on the job, but I'd be low man on the totem pole at whatever office I transferred, have to do most of the shit jobs and wouldn't have my own route for a bit.
