Somehow I doubt my library will have this.

This suggestion might be obvious, but no discussion about movies should leave out The Big Lebowski.

Own it. Love it.

That sounds awesome. I looked up a bunch of flicks randomly and only found two or three they didn't have.

More importantly, they have a ton of Troma films.

Now to find a way around the lack of credit card problem.

Sometimes libraries are a good source for older films...see if they have "Being There", "Oh, Lucky Man", "Harold and Maude" "Dr. Strangelove" or "Local Hero".

I don't think I went to the theatres once this year. By comparison, that is a shitload of movies you've seen.

This is true. I found 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' and 'The Blob' on vhs. I wouldn't buy vhs at all, but it's not terrible if I'm just checking out a movie and it's only a dollar.

That said, I watched Strangelove for the second time last night in the span of three years. And still disliked it as much as ever. The first half drags so slowly. I didn't laugh once. The only thing that saved it for me was that I'm a fan of Peter Sellers.

My friend made me watch 'Being There' and I hated it too. Same thing. Didn't laugh once. Nearly fell asleep a couple of times. Just general boredom.

So I don't know. Maybe I'll give 'Local Hero' and 'O Lucky Man' a chance.

Being There is a really good film, for the record. Not terribly exciting, but a good film. Especially pertinent in light of the current president. Also, have you seen The Man Who Would Be King? That one's a good candidate for being at the library.

What's up with this, anyway? I don't have to pay anything to check out anything from the library. I thought Canada was supposed to be more progressive about that kind of shit?

My library system has a pretty good selection of DVDs. This winter I've been checking out the Sopranos, seasons 1-5. Never had HBO so they were all new to me. Plus, the library always has lots of Criterion titles and other quality stuff.

Damn, I'll have to go check out if my library has the Sopranos.

I just watched In Good Company last night. It was pretty good and plus having Scarlett Johansson in it didn't hurt.

It only started maybe a year or two ago. I used to rent videos for free all the time when I was a kid. When I first found out I had to pay, I boycotted the system for the longest time. Then I realised that I'd rather pay $1 a movie than $5 a movie at Blockbuster.

They do have a pretty good selection of modern stuff. I just rented 'Dogville' the other day.

Now Daystar seems to understand more the kind of movies I like.

I love Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Liked 'Igby Goes Down'. I want to see it again. Slacker has been on my list for a few years now but can't find it anywhere. Virgin Suicides I just bought and enjoy, though not as much as Lost In Translation.

I started to watch 'Julien Donkey-Boy' but couldn't get past the first five minutes so I don't know if I'd like 'Gummo'. Korine just really doesn't seem like my type of director.

I'll check out the rest, though.

Great film. Own it on DVD. Torturro pretty much steals that show.

Watched Skyhigh last night (the asian film) -- it was surprisingly good, kind of Ghost meets The First Power meets asian martial arts films (including swordplay).

i watched war of the worlds last night. very well done. the acting wasnt anything too memorable, but the amazing special effects, spielberg's efficient directing style, and good pacing made for a good movie.

I watched this the other week and it was a better movie than I expected. I also played a made-up drinking game to it. Whenever Topher Grace says something awkward, drink. You will be lit less than an hour in.

I just watched In The Mood For Love -- really beautifully done film, in a sort of Casablanca romantic kind of way. But warning -- extremely "sparse" and slow. Lots of brilliant use of silence.
