Quote:
Wal-Mart's attempt to mimic Amazon, NetFlix, and Blockbuster by providing an automated system that recommends movies based on the types of DVDs its customers previously ordered came to a crashing halt Thursday after blogs spread the word that the Planet of the Apes DVD was linked to "Similar Items" that included DVDs about Martin Luther King, Dorothy Dandridge, Jack Johnson and Tina Turner -- all notable African Americans. "We are heartsick that this happened and are currently doing everything possible to correct the problem," Wal-Mart spokeswoman Mona Williams said in a statement. "We were horrified to discover that some hurtful and offensive combinations are being mapped together. ... We are deeply sorry that this happened." The company gave no explanation for how the software program managed to select only films about African-Americans for the recommendations.

Apparently if you clicked on King Kong in the store it sent you to the Malcolm X DVD.

How many DVDs does one need to buy in order to manipulate Wal-Mart's system and make them look bad?

Me either. I think someone probably made that just to start flame wars in message boards like the one mentioned above.

Jeez, it's just Wal-Mart. Damn.

Wait.

So you're saying that Martin Luther King, Jr. wasn't in Planet Of The Apes?

First off, it's really not a stretch to see that Planet of the Apes has metaphors about race and class to the point where the tables have turned and the white people are held under the thumb of a class of people they used to rule over.

Secondly, change the animal from apes to just about anything other animal and the lame joke goes away. This isn't racist at all but just another pot shot at Wal-Mart.

so no truth to the rumor that Wal Mart has altered movies like "Do The Right Thing" to include commentaries of old Jimmy The Greek and Howard Cosell outtakes?

also, people performing "Mammy"

You can still find Little Black Sambo in the books, too.

How the fuck did they get away with that?

Never went to Perkins. I guess the irony is that Denny's got hit with charges of racism and not Sambo's.

Also, if I was black--I would never go in Cracker Barrel. Not that I go there anyways, but still.
