this descriptor came up in the demise of Pedro the Lion thread. It is also one of the reasons that I love(d) that band so much. I need more bands that do this to you. Feed my melancholy.

Get on c-wood and pick randomly from my files- 95% probably fits the criteria.

Only completely depressing albums I can think of are:
Posies Dear 23
Lydia Lunch, The Drowning of Lucy Hamilton

Some Tracks:
Husker Du, Candy Apple Grey
"Too Far Down"
"No Promises Have I Made"
"Hardly Getting over it"

Smiths, Meat is Murder
That Joke isn't Funny anymore
And just about any other Smiths will get you there if you listen to enough non-stop.

Insides' elusive and icy electronic pop explores the darkest, seamiest corners of love and sex -- their songs capture the emptiness and hostility that surface when the afterglow fades, ugly scenes punctuated by eruptions of violence, waves of self-loathing and caresses that are cold to the touch. Singer/bassist Kirsty Yates' vocals are eerily dispassionate, detailing her sordid tales of physical intimacy and emotional distance with alarming candor -- songs like "Darling Effect," "Skin Divers" and "Skykicking" are brutally revealing, giving voice to thoughts and feelings perhaps better left unspoken. The bitter irony of the album's title aside, Euphoria is harrowing and deeply disturbing, yet strangely beautiful -- as unforgiving as it is unforgettable.

I've already got a lot of this stuff. This Insides intrigues me.

Thanks. I just picked it up offa half.com for $4. Early 90's/4AD/wrist-slitting. It's got to be good, right?

Just about any Mogwai record.

"Come On Die Young" if I had to pick one.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't slit my writs to Autolux, though.

I think half of the record is a little depressing. I think it's that way due to the style of the monotoned vocals and guitar effects.

I found out the day before I saw them them that their vocalist is a male. I had no clue.
