Portishead's self titled. Don't know how I forgot that one. Hell, Dummy too.

I have one Pedro The Lion disc -- I don't remember it being depressing, though.

My first thought was Three Doors Down, but that's probably not what you're going after.

If that's the case, this discussion has to include "Big Dipper" by Cracker.

I agree with Splates on the 4AD stuff...particularly Dead Can Dance.

I will add though The Dirty Three...Warren Ellis is one morose mf, and his fiddle can make a man go out, throw back a few, and walk into oncoming traffic. I'm actually listening to 'Horse Stories' right now, and damn, at 2am its a downer.

This for me is more an airy album. I guess its all in the mind's eye, but on this one, I don't ever imagine/think negative thoughts, and it never bums me out. In fact, it usually destresses me. But once again, its all the mind's eye.

ok, I'll give you that one

edit--although upon reflection here a few seconds later...it could also be seen as a song of ascension into a higher plane

Yeah, his debut has some sad songs on it. Myself, I find Joy Division to be particularly depressing. I still like though.

I think splates mentioned here, but Gloomy Sunday by Billie Holiday should be on wrist opening mix.
