We Are Scientists Preps Virgin Debut

Michael D. Ayers, N.Y.

New York rock trio We Are Scientists will release its Virgin debut, "Love and Squalor" on Jan. 10. The set has already enjoyed success in the U.K. since being released there in October, leading to a slot on the upcoming ShockWaves NME Awards tour alongside Arctic Monkeys, Maximo Park and Mystery Jets.

"I guess it fits into that Strokes formula, where the buzz is created over there before here," lead singer/guitarist Keith Murray tells Billboard.com. "But, it's not as contrived as it may seem. When we were at South by Southwest this past March, BBC Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq approached us after one of our shows and asked us to do a set on his [radio] show. We did, and, it was great. And we've been getting a lot of radio support there ever since. So, it made sense [to release the album in the U.K. first], because he had been giving us a push."

We Are Scientists formed in 2000 and relocated to New York from California in 2001. The band self-released several EPs while its members simultaneously held down day jobs in information technology, film and advertising. What would become "Love and Squalor" was recorded in about three weeks in January 2005.

"We went into the studio with out a label -- everything was unknown," Murray says. "It was recorded in a North Hollywood studio. We didn't really have the budget to do anything big, so there was minimal equipment involved. And our producer (Ariel Rechtshaid) had experiencing making lo-fi albums, so we just wanted it to really sound like our live show."

Prior to the NME tour, the group has a handful of North American shows on tap, beginning Tuesday (Dec. 27) in Los Angeles and running through Jan. 20 in Hoboken, N.J.

While Keith Murray (vocals/guitar) Chris Cain (bass), and Michael Tapper (drums) don a nerdy math-chic look, their glossy indie rock sound is all style. With Love and Squalor marks the band's major label debut release for Virgin. Sure, fans of Bloc Party, the Killers, the Rapture, and Franz Ferdinand will most likely take to this snazzy 12-song set; however We Are Scientists offer one element that the rest of the pack does not--more substance than schtick. With Love and Squalor is accessible enough for mainstream alternative rock fans, but also slick enough for those indie rock loyalists who still worship the Smiths. Album opener "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt" highlights the band's sexiest side with chunky guitar hooks and a flirty, danceable chorus. Murray's nervy vocals are a near match for Gene's Martin Rossiter as he croons "My Body is your body/I won't tell anybody/if you want to use my body/go for it." Some might think their introduction is a bit brash, but We Are Scientists immediately succeed in keeping cool and cockiness parallel. "This Scene Is Dead" and "Callbacks" curve around punky, fist-pumping rhythms while "Worth the Wait" and "The Great Escape" toy with art rock aesthetic. Unlike the Killers' Hot Fuss, With Love and Squalor is not a pretentious package. We Are Scientists come off well in being both snide and playful. Finding that balance is what makes With Love and Squalor a solid debut.

They were decent opening for The National. Reminded me of Strokes mixed with a local NC band from a few years ago, The White Octave (mainly due to vox, I think). I downloaded the album the other day, but haven't unzipped it yet.

i agree with the description for their sound. i am about 4 songs in - good stuff. nothing amazing, but decent. i have a feeling that this will be in rotation for a few while.

speaking of the strokes...the new album is KICKASS.......

i tried to see them in sf because they were playing at popscene, but we waited about an hour in line and decided to leave. from what i heard, it's mediocre. nothing special.

It's all hype. This is nothing but mediocre indie pop.
