Guitarists/bassists:
What brand/gauge string do you use?

For me...

Electric:
Ernie Ball Super Slinky 10's
Why? I play HARD and Ernie Balls are not only cheap... about $6 a set at my local shop, but resilient, too. I've had the same set on my Strat for more than a year (and they just recently went dead - so it's time to change 'em!)

Acoustic:
John Pearse Phosphorous Bronze 12's
(used to use Martin Marquis 12's)
Give a good, balanced sound - nice highs that aren't too shrill, with a good, sturdy bass response. And, they're cheap.

I like to use GHS 11s on my electric. They last a while and are slightly brighter.

I forgot what's on my acoustic.

I use D'addario XL. I play hard, too, and I break strings frequently. Maybe I should try Ernie Balls'....?

I don't know, whatever my guitar came with. I'm kind of new to the instrument.

If/when I get to that point, I'll probably replace 'em with Ernie Balls, because they use linux. (Supporting a Microsoft-free business.)

Acoustic: Dean Markley Medium gauge. They aren't very bright after two days. I like that.

i'm thinking of changing though.
i didn't like Martin's at all. i broke them easily and they sounded bad to me.

Acoustic: I've used Dean Markley mediums in the past, but I can't remember what's on it now.

A lot of people don't like them but I use Elixir Polywebs (the original style) on my acoustic guitar. I usually use mediums but am thinking of getting some lights next time.

The beautiful thing about Elixirs is they hold their original sound forever, unlike uncoated strings which go dead within a week or so.

I only have to change my Elixirs once they're so old they don't hold their tune anymore.

They are more expensive to start off with but the longer life makes up for the cost and then some.

As for my electric, I'm not as particular and haven't found any that I love so I mix it up each time and try different brands.

HEY GO SEE MY THREAD ABOUT DELAY PEDALS

i use - exclusively, for some unknown reason - Dean Markley BLUE STEEL 11s on my guitars, though i keep breaking strings on my SG, and i think i will go with 10s

i try to change them monthly if i can.

What's recommended for someone who plays hard, wants nice bright dynamics and clarity, but also wants those strings to have some BALLS?

About $2.50 a set, free shipping, and just as good as anything (except Elixirs and the like.)

Bass: Super Slinkies'; used to use DR, Ken Smith etc.; Not worth it. Hold up just fine, hold their stretch and clarity quite well and aren't terribly expensive. (though i could rant about the expense of bass strings forever......)
