I bought Dig My Mood and like it tons, but I know this is a far cry as an ample sample of his catalog:

I am thinking I am really going to like, you know the countrier sounding ones, or am I way off target?

NL and his Cowboy Outfit
Imaginary Bird
Labour of Lust

may be Jesus of cool

steer me right, I think this is my new fave find

The ones you listed are all keepers. The older albums from his catalog rock a lot harder than his recent offerings. Jesus Of Cool is also known as Pure Pop For Now People (U.S. title). Also worthy of seeking out is Rose Of England.

Be warned that among those you and I listed, Nick and His Cowboy Outfit is probably the weakest. Abominable Showman also has some good moments.

The Persuader, Party Of One Prouder and Pinker Than Ever, along with Nick the Knife are probalby his weakest thi all contain a worthy song or two. Of course, IMHO, YMMV, and the rest of the usual disclaimers....

Jesus of Cool is one of the best albums ever made.

Yeah that's not a maybe, its his most essential. I'd say Rockpile "Seconds of Pleasure" is also more essential than any of the others mentioned. Both are pop though, not country.

I'd say after those two, get Labour of Lust and Imaginary Bird. I agree that Cowboy Outfit is probably one of the weaker ones. I traded it in years ago. And despite the name, don't expect it to be very country-oriented. If I'm thinking correctly, Imaginary Bird would be the best pick up if you really want country-oriented Lowe but I can't honestly recommend it over Jesus of cool or Rockpile.

thanks all,

any news on The Convincer AMG has got it as a dead center between the previous 2

billy g, I'll trust you on the Cowboy and ditch it, thanks for the Rockpile insert, I will search it. thanks much

I was amazed that hearing a best of comp in the store, it all sounded so dateless, unless the headphones were that bad.

The closest you'll come to Dig My Mood is the equally good The Convincer, although as others have said, The Impossible Bird isn't too far removed either.

And I find Party Of One to be the most underrated Nick Lowe album. It's easily worth the shelf space in anyone's collection. But I'm one of those people who thinks Nick Lowe never put out a bad album.

Yeah I think this is right. I was forgetting about the The Convincer.

I also agree with Radcliffe that he's never put out a bad album, I just don't think they are all worth owning if you are going to limit yourself to a "reasonable" size cd/record collection and want to have a large variety of genres and artists.

Country Nick:
The Impossible Bird
The Convincer

Halfway between the old pop and the new country:
Party of One

Also (PopTodd should be popping up about this momentarily), his pre-solo career group Brinsley Schwarz (for which he wrote most of the songs, including the original "What's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love and Understanding") had a low key country sorta feel.

Good as the country records are, I love Nick the Pop Weirdo so much that the country stuff will always be a disappointment to me.

Yes.

Also yes.
And for Brinsley Schwarz recommendations, I would start with:
Nervous On the Road/The New Favourites Of... (2-fer on BGO)
then move along to:
Silver Pistol
and
Cruel To Be Kind (live @ the BBC)

But be sure to avoid the self-titled/Despite It All 2-fer. There's maybe 2 and a half good songs on there total.

Also, if you love the pop weirdo Nick,
The Wilderness Years collection is worth owning. It's a bit uneven, but has some pretty stellar stuff on there, including "Heart Of the City", a couple original demo versions of Rockpile songs, and a couple of tunes that take jabs at the Bay City Rollers.

Good stuff.
