The winner of my name in the gift exchange is the toe-sock lady from last year. THIS year, she asked me what I wanted (phew!). I want a new book, but there's a bunch of crap out there. SO! You guys are good at this kind of thing: Give me a few titles and authors I should ask for. I am coming down from reading "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle" and I need something amazing to be able to follow that up. Pleasepleaseplease do not say "The Da Vinci Code" because I am boycotting that.

blindness by jose saramago.

it's mesmerizing. i read it a few years ago and it's one of the few, truly "great" books by a living author.

If you haven't read it:
A Confederacy of Dunces
One of my favorite books ever.

"Angels and Demons" is way better than the Da Vinci code!

I've just finished a huge T.C. Boyle kick - pretty much all of his novels are great. (Though I liked Road to Wellville the least.)

I love Haruki Murakami too.

I'd suggest anything by author Ha Jin:

a collection of short stories: The Bridegroom
Waiting
The Crazed
or his latest: War Trash

Do what I did and get the wrong day. Then, you get to beg your Supervisor to let you take lunch early so you can haul ten different sizes of ass around the city to get your present together so you don't look lame in front of the dept. That's what I did.
