So the other day I was talking to a indie-rockish type friend of mine and in passing made a reference to the song "Two of Us", which isn't a HUGE Beatles song, but certainly well known enough to drop in conversation. And the guy just kinda mentioned that he had never listened to them. This is after discussing the AmRep catalogue in depth with me. That sorta shit just really freaks me out, and I'm sure there's more out there than I even care to realize. But it got me thinking about the music I just sort of assume that everyone on this planet that isn't 100 years old or deaf would be familiar with. and the thing is, I operate under the assumption that these albums/songs/artists are fair game for mentioning around anyone without having to explain why. This list is made up of mostly classic rock and oldies, but there's definitely some other stuff in there. Am I the only one who does this? Is it wrong to mention Axis: Bold as Love or something without expecting blank stares?

I OFTEN make the mistake that people know as much about subjects as I do.

It usually draws blank stairs or people ask my why I am always so serious.

its called generation gap......

i get a kick out of people that havent seen the movies
ferris bueller, orginal star wars, etc

if it wasn't for the beatles releasing "single" albums in the last few years they would be even more forgotten.....

I don't know that Beatles song. I've probably heard it at some point in my life, but I don't own Let It Be or recognize that song by name. If by "never listened to them", you mean "never heard anything by them" then that's indeed surprising. But I'm not surprised that lots of people who consider themselves music fans don't own or listen to Beatles albums. I probably owned close to 1000 records before I bought a Beatles album and if I had to shrink my collection to 1000, I probably wouldn't own any.

I think a lot of people buy (and thus listen to) only or mostly current music. I used to do this myself until about five years ago. I don't know whether this is really all that surprising but I know I'm glad I don't do it anymore.

My 40 year old co-worker could not name all four Beatles. Sad.

The only Beatles albums I've ever owned are Live at the BBC, The Beatles (white album), and, before a girlfriend sat on it, The Beatles 1967 - 70 - and even still, I'm sure I've heard every Beatles song in existence. I don't know how anyone could live in the western world without having at least a passing knowledge of Beatles songs.

I find it weird when people, who are alleged music geeks and who will know every note from every release on the obscure Hogvomit label, choose to ignore all music from previous eras and then still feel they have the expertise to declare something "the best album of all time."

seriously? the one on Let It Be that's just john and paul singing like a duet with just guitar?

what sort of dog did you need to eat to survive in those caves you guys were raised in?

I only know this song because of the Michael Penn / Aimee Mann duet on the I Am Sam soundtrack.

I've actually never heard 'Let it Be' either so I wasn't familiar with that one as well. I've heard every other proper Beatles album except that one.

I've probably heard every Beatle song or album, at the very least once in my life due to my parents and/or friends, but I am not a fan, and I dont think I would ever voluntarily put the Beatles on myself.

Whether you like'em or not, they changed the face of music.

I've never listened to an entire Beatles album all the way through in my entire life.

That in no way disqualifies me from saying what I think is the greatest album of all time. Hint: it's not by the Beatles.

While mark oversimplified it a bit, this is an oversimplification of vast proportion.

I hold the opinion that no music made since The Beatles isn't influenced by The Beatles.
