(comment: we do have the death penalty in Texas and I wish it applied in this situation - someone tries this with my dog and I'll effect it myself)

Woman charged with stabbing dog 27 times
Police say stabbing followed argument with estranged husband.

Friday, January 13, 2006

Reyes Martinez was in his front yard talking to a friend when his estranged wife drove up and a quarrel began, Austin police said.

The friend, Alberto Rivera, later told officers that Joanne Lee Hinojosa was yelling at Martinez, 31, and at one point took a swing at him, according to a police affidavit. As Martinez retreated down the street and police were called, the affidavit said, Hinojosa picked up Martinez's 20-pound mixed-breed dog, Marti, and carried it inside the house in South Austin.

"A short time later Alberto heard Marti yelp loudly," said the affidavit, which described the Jan. 3 event.

Police found blood on the floor just inside the front door. They discovered Marti in a pool of blood in the kitchen with a knife sticking out of its left side, the affidavit said. Officers found a second knife on the blood-covered kitchen counter.

The dog had been stabbed 27 times, and police said a veterinarian who examined the dog found stab wounds to its lungs, spleen, diaphragm and stomach. The dog was later destroyed.

Hinojosa, 31, was jailed Thursday and charged with cruelty to animals, family violence and criminal mischief. The Kyle resident faces up to two years in a state jail on the charges. Her bail was set at $50,000.

"This was a particularly nasty crime," Austin police Lt. Doug Dukes said. "This will not be tolerated in the City of Austin, and we are going to deal with it to the fullest extent of the law."

It's a horrible crime and the woman should be punished but are you really saying she should be executed for killing a dog?

Re-read the death penalty thread.

That's a sad story, though. Man...

Why do people get more upset about senseless violence against animals than they do about senseless violence against people? People get stabbed 27 times every day, and nobody blinks an eye.

Yes. It's that type of unabashed cruelty that should be expunged from the planet.

If I knew someone who'd been stabbed 27 times, I'd blink both eyes. Blinking would happen with dog stabbings, too.

You get particles out of your eyes when you blink, you know.

I'd say the upset factor comes more with the idea that the violence is misdirected to the innocent, whether be a pet or a kid. People get far more upset about a toddler or a dog getting stabbed then they do about an angry wife/girlfriend stabbing an ex. I think it's the vulnerability/lack of blame factor.

sometimes people deserve it though. dogs rarely do, and even when they do it's some person's fault usually.

because nobody posted a thread about a person getting stabbed 27 times here.

Granted it's an animal, but its still a breathing living species, that is far more part of the human element, then lets say a snake or killer shark...

this person is sick and should be dealt with severely....they have the ability to do that to a dog, i have no doubt they have the crazies to to that to a person too.

I remember when I saw 'American Psycho' in the theater the biggest reaction of disgust from the audience throughout the whole movie came when he killed the dog. Everyone laughed when he snuffed out the bum. But I guess the bum could have defended himself and the dog was kind of helpless.

My dog displays more emotion than most human beings. If someone killed my dog, I would poke them in the eye with a sharp stick.

Then I'd throw them off a cliff.

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I opened this thread, but it certainly made me mad and sad. Poor pup.

I disagree with you. I've seen a fair share of indignation and repulsion in, for example, the hollowed out bed thread.
