(comment: we do have the death penalty in Texas and I wish it applied in this situation - someone tries this with my dog and I'll effect it myself)

Reyes Martinez was in his front yard talking to a friend when his estranged wife drove up and a quarrel began, Austin police said.
The friend, Alberto Rivera, later told officers that Joanne Lee Hinojosa was yelling at Martinez, 31, and at one point took a swing at him, according to a police affidavit. As Martinez retreated down the street and police were called, the affidavit said, Hinojosa picked up Martinez's 20-pound mixed-breed dog, Marti, and carried it inside the house in South Austin.
"A short time later Alberto heard Marti yelp loudly," said the affidavit, which described the Jan. 3 event.
Police found blood on the floor just inside the front door. They discovered Marti in a pool of blood in the kitchen with a knife sticking out of its left side, the affidavit said. Officers found a second knife on the blood-covered kitchen counter.
The dog had been stabbed 27 times, and police said a veterinarian who examined the dog found stab wounds to its lungs, spleen, diaphragm and stomach. The dog was later destroyed.
Hinojosa, 31, was jailed Thursday and charged with cruelty to animals, family violence and criminal mischief. The Kyle resident faces up to two years in a state jail on the charges. Her bail was set at $50,000.
"This was a particularly nasty crime," Austin police Lt. Doug Dukes said. "This will not be tolerated in the City of Austin, and we are going to deal with it to the fullest extent of the law."
