There's another much-lauded for their influence band. I own a couple of albums from The Clash including the "classic" London Calling. It's far from being a favorite of mine. Don't like it much at all.

Do I get a spanking now?

I'm a him. Almost is a nickname from work; apparently I reminded people of the kid from Almost Famous when I was 16 or so.

And as for not liking the Clash; well now you're just on the list.

No, I was just trying to think of another "much-lauded for their influence band" that had commercial success too.

My distaste for the Beatles is well documented.

But there's a lot of those older bands that I don't like. Then there's a lot that I like. I can't really pinpoint what one thing turns me off.

For instance:

Like: The Who, Bob Dylan, The Stones, The VU, Van Morrison, The Clash, The Monkees...

Dislike: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, etc. etc.

You may have an artist in say, India, who is loved by all and is of the mass appeal/influence but barely reach people other than the specialty crowd in the US, Britain, etc. The Beatles though have been exposed all over the place. Therefore their influence would be greater. You're right, the way I proposed that answer was a bit one-sided, but I think there is a great validity to it. Not that you didn't agree on some level with it

Now, you did say group, so perhaps this isn't valid, but what about Beethoven? Bach? The caveman who invented the drum?

maybe...but at the same time, I still think more people could name or hum a Beatles song than Bach or Beethoven.

I dislike them solely on the covers of their dvd's. That's my only exposure to them and that's enough.

So using that line of reasoning, can we agree that David Hasselhoff is the world's "most influential" actor?

Gotta remember than often when a couple has new kids they fall off the face of the earth culturally, e.g. my parents. Except they only missed the 80's and 90's.

I'm in that camp, I'll put "Auntie Griselda" up against any Beatles song, save "Daytripper" or "Paperback Writer". I also like The Rutles. "Ouch!" is utter brilliance.

The Beatles just annoy me. And they always seemed really pompous.

My love for the Monkees might have a lot to do with the show. But I own their newest Greatest Hits disc and I think the music stands up on its own.

I'm just a big fan of pop music. I'd rather listen to 'Daydream Believer' and '(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone' than 'Yellow Submarine' or 'Eleanor Rigby'.

The Beatles just reminded me too much of a dressed-up boy band. I had an ongoing argument with a friend for a while that Hanson were our generation's Beatles.

And The Monkees didn't give you the same impression? Bizarre. I mean, I don't get what's pompous about the Beatles at all. If you like pop music, they should be right up your alley. Different strokes, I guess, but damn.

And Daydream Believer is better than Eleanor Rigby.... I still remember Leonard Bernstein explaining on primetime TV the superior song structure of Eleanor Rigby... doric modes or some shit like that. My memory is that he gave George Martin credit.

I guess if you go strictly by the dictionary (excessively ornate or exhibiting self-importance), then sure they're a little pompous. To me, pompous carries a extra connotation of arrogance, which doesn't fit at all. Bob Dylan is pompous, while the Beatles are not, for instance.

Lennon & McCartney (or McCartney/Lennon, if you prefer the Macca version) aren't arrogant? I don't think it's that hard of an argument that they reached such heights as a result of their arrogance, especially toward each other.

I don't think of arrogant as being pompous. In fact, the impact of who they were and how they "changed the world's culture" was to be irreverent ("we are more popular than Jesus" was a deconstruction of safe and pompous culture, not a pompous declaration). The two movies, the long hair, the psychedelia, the snotty humor... it was all deflating of pomposity at the time. In retrospect, it is kinda annoying, I'll grant you that.
