After watching The Last Waltz the other night I realized that the only performer I didn't really know all that much about was Dr. John. What's his deal and is he worth giving some time to?

He's really got his own style and I dig it a bunch.

N'awlins piano.

Try Gris Gris and Babylon for the trippy early stuff.

Try Gumbo for his tribute to what contributed to his current style.

Try Creole Moon to see what he's sounding like these days.

Mac Rebbenack (sp?) aka "Dr. John" has been a staple in the New Orleans music scene for over 3 decades.

I'll always push for people to explore the music that comes from my home in Southern Louisiana (Cajun, Blues, Zydeco, Swamp-pop, New Orleans, Jazz, etc.) just because it really is sort of a "gumbo" of musical styles that converge right where the Mississippi River (and Atchafalya Basin) meets The Gulf of Mexico.

I recommend "In The Right Place" as my favorite Dr. John album. Lots of "New Orleans" sound, some good Meters-styled-funk, a touch of some smoother ("southern"???) balladeering and that gravel fueled voice of his pushing it through. . .

His "hits" from that record include: "Right Place, Wrong Time" and "Such a Night", but, I've shaken my ass to just about all of it at one time or another.

I grew up in Lafayette - lived there until I was 28 (other than law school) and been in Austin 5 years now.

I love Austin, but, Louisiana will always be "home".

Nah, but I lived in Ruston for 4-5 years. I know lots of people around from all over the state. I even know a handful from Cutoff, and they weren't even on The Real World. I don't believe I ever went to Lafayette, though. You go to USL?

EDIT: I'm also aware that anything north of Alexandria, or Opelousas, depending on whom you ask, is considered Arkansas. Ha.

HA! You are right about that Alexandria reference! Once you stop crawfishin', it ain't La no' mo'!!!

I went to LSU for two years and then moved back to Lafayette to get my grades up and graduate so I could get into law school.

I'm supposed to head that way next week for a couple of days - which means another 10 pounds to lose on 1.01.05!

Steve, if you also like Van Morrison, might i suggest Van's "A Period of Transition" produced by the aforementioned M.D. Dr. M.R.; somewhat, though not really indicative of Dr. John's sound though i have always loved the soundscape of that album---kinda captures these two guys really well....

I have Gris Gris but really haven't listened to it enough.
Paul Weller does a pretty good cover of "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" on Stanley Road, which, ironically I have with me today.

Shit, a friend of mine who lived in Napoleanville, doing the money for newly elected Congressgar Charle Melconon, told me anyone north of I-10 is a certifiable Yankee ;)
