2005 was really odd for me, music-wise. i listened to less than 40 albums from the year, owning like 25 of those. most of what i was looking forward to ended up as a disappointment (human after all, twin cinema, gimme fiction). i didn't veer too far from the mainstream with albums, but really dug deep for singles and EPs. this is also the earliest before a shmoo poll deadline that i've ever submitted a list.

1. The National - Alligator
2. Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger
3. Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
4. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
5. Ivy - In The Clear
6. Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better...
7. Jamie Lidell - Multiply
8. Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Cold Roses
9. Shout Out Louds - Howl Howl Gaff Gaff
10. My Morning Jacket - Z
11. Brendan Benson - The Alternative to Love
12. Depeche Mode - Playing The Angel
13. Gorillaz - Demon Days
14. Robbers on High Street - Tree City
15. Super Furry Animals - Love Kraft
16. Sigur Ros - Takk...
17. Doves - Some Cities
18. Tom Vek - We Have Sound
19. Harvey Danger - Little by Little
20. Röyksopp - The Understanding

These are both really cool, and I think I got that W&C from you. Thanks for that.

I'm kinda surprised at what your top 2 are considering a lot of the other stuff you talk about/listen to. Not that I think they're bad albums (I haven't heard more than a few snippets of The National) or anything.

I was actually thinking something similar when I was making the list. I guess my tastes tend to be either standard indie-ish stuff or fairly experimental for the most part. This year I didn't explore as much as I did when I was still in school, so there are fewer of the above type releases. I did seek out a few though.

Ill have to remember to try and find a few songs to listen to

and yeah that Organ album is definitely '04, i still play the song "Brother" off it all the time - such a great Cure-ish bassline on that song.

I SAID I did a real half assed job.

And the song "Milk" gives me the willies.

About my number 1 - Not very indie-tastic, but I think it deserves more respect than it gets here. Anyway, I felt like this year there wasn't a lot seperating my top 10. No real clear #1. So, I decided to just go with the album I listened to (and enjoyed) the most.

Other albums I enjoyed this year:

Wolf Parade, Lightning Bolt, Corrosion of Conformity, Beck - Guero (not as bad as most people say), Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Eluvium, QOTSA
The Evens, Soilent Green, Goblin Cock, System of a Down - Hypnotize, Candlemass

I can't imagine using any other criteria.

I'm going to be hardpressed to finish mine. I've been relistening to alot of stuff and buying more 2005 releases to increase my pool of candidates in the last month. I've decided as a result that 2005 was a much stronger year than I've given it credit for being. I'll have a hard time cutting my list down to 20 even if there's less that I absolutely love than in some years. I also don't think I've heard anything that I really dislike this year although maybe that's more of a result of better filtering on my part.

Great, underapprecitated band. It seems all the people who like Bloc Pary or Babyshambles should really be pushing this band.

Yeh, I was surprised at how little attention this release got. Maybe the band's getting too good to be accepted as "indie" anymore.
