Hey, Davey -- you and JC seem to really like that National record -- you think I'd like it? You usually have me pegged pretty accurately.

I don't really know on this one. Most of the ingredients are there for something you'd like I think, Leonard Cohen imagery passed through that same Joy Division and Echo & The Bunnymen sonic machine that Interpol rode to success. Same producer. And the singer does have a voice that sounds like Ian sometimes. And the guy from Tindersticks. And Nick Cave. And Scott Walker. And there's probably a little of all those guys music in their sound too. But some people seem to react either negatively or with a big yawn when these guys come up so who knows how you'll feel. The EP last year knocked me out and I was a bit letdown when I first heard the LP stream of Alligator, but went ahead and bought it later anyway and it obviously really grew on me. You can watch the video of Daughters of the Soho Riots at http://www.beggars.com/us/thenational/player/ which is a bit low key and melancholy. Some of it is more upbeat, with the anthemic Abel song almost in Springsteen territory. The two songs I chose to put on my year end comp were "Daughters of the Soho Riots" and "Geese of Beverly Road".

I thought the National sucked, but the description of 'Leonard Cohen oassed through a Joy Div/Bunnymen filter makes me want to listen to them

I don't know what's going on with Corgan right now because the stuff he's writing for other people is hella good. He doesn't seem to save his best material for himself anymore.

I'd love to see him produce an entire album like "I'm On Fire" and "Wherever I Go" from Marianne Faithfull's Kissin' Time.

awesome. I appreciate this album as well. Obviously not as much as you did, but glad you actually put it at #1 and didn't fear a backlash from people.

It was in my top ten last year. Nice to see it getting some love. Hopefully Herman Düne - Not on Top will eventually get a few fans as well.
