So i've got my windex and lint-free cloth and a hella lot of dirty vinyl. What i want to know is, do i wipe out from the centre, a la a cd, or do i wipe circularly around the record?

No Windex! Ammonia not good for rekkids! Mix de-ionized water and 91% isopropyl alcohol, 4 to 1 ratio, tiny drop of dish detergent. AROUND the grooves with a new, short-bristled paint brush. Dry AROUND the grooves with lint-free cloth.

Yes! No Windex! Tentoze's mixture is a good one. Not sure if the paint brush permits enough pressure when scrubbing...don't be afraid to use a little pressure.

If you're so inclined you can use this stuff

And when you get really serious:

This does work well.

The Wilson sisters are allergic to soap and clean water.

I take cheap boar bristle brushes (I never use nylon or other synthetics), like 1 1/2" or 2" wide ones, and cut the bristle length back to about an inch and a half long to stiffen up the overall thing. And, yeh, ELT is right- don't be afraid to scrub.

Where does one get deionized water?

When you say around the grooves, you mean to follow the grooves around the record?

D-I water is basically just ultra-purified- most pharmacies carry it in gallon jugs alongside distilled. As a fall-back, use distilled, but the purer the better. And, yes- follow the grooves- scrubbing clockwise AND counter-clockwise. Wipe clean. Change cloths often as they get wet. Keep one for final drying.

When I get home I'll look, but I have some solution that fits into my brush thingie. I always give the records a once over with this brush before I play them.
