I'm so not hip, I don't even own an i-pod yet. :( Yet is the key word.

I vow to one day have a room entirely filled wall-to-wall with cd's & vinyl, regardless of the pain of storage.

audri, i have a sure fire way for you to get a pod. i'm signing up. check this out:

I've never even downloaded a song off the internet. It may be an ego thing but i love when i have company over and they see my collection and i hear the inevitable "I haven't heard of any of these guys, oh escept for the Beach Boys (or whatever)". Great conversation pieces and it really allows me to focus in on a particular album instead of going to the random playlist. People come into my house and they know what i like. I also love just sitting in front of my collection and looking through what i have. Randomly grabbing albums to play that i haven't listened to in a while. I fear that i'd focus on albums in the A-M range moreso than the N-Z range.

i'm not exactly hip.

i know this is of no use, since you will go digital any way that it can be done, but i'm an artifact man. Someone brought up the social experience of going to a record store, which i'll second, but there's also other social experiences to think of, like bringing cd's or mixes to parties. You could try the server thing, but that would only be useful if your friends are as up on this as you are. you could bring your ipod, but is it really worth it to risk having it poked and molested by beer soaked hands?

cd's also slow things down, like the listening process, which is invaluable to me. i fear that the computer age makes it easier to gather tracks like they are trophies, as opposed to discovering albums like they are gems, and my head simply does not move as fast as everyone elses. so that's me two cents...

I enjoy the superior sound quality that CDs offer (compared to MP3s - we'll leave the "CD vs. vinyl" debate for another day). Until I can store my entire music collection in a lossless format for a reasonable price, the CDs are staying. Even if I can't tell the difference between an MP3 encoded at a very high bitrate and an actual CD (I've never actually done a side-by-side test), the thought of listening to MP3s when I have/had the "real" thing is just too painful to deal with.

I'd like to point out that CD's were the first lossy format, and that I honestly don't believe that you could tell the difference between a CD and a 256kbps mp3, and that any difference you hear is probably psychosomatic.
