I'm thinking seriously about this Pax system. With my latest round of trade-ins, I've gotten my collection down to a little over 3600. A bunch of them are cdrs in slimlines though so they may all fit in this. I'm just wondering if this is going to be strong enough to handle the weight of 3500+ cds.

If you're at IKEA anyhow, you might like the expedit. Cheap, even in the bigger size. Each section is perfect for LPs as is, and you can get small drawers (opaque ikea-wood, two per section) for cassettes, big ones (clear or red translucent plastic, one per) for DVDs and little inserts for CDs.

Can even fit a mini system in there, or one of those super-expensive tiny component ones.

But what happens when you get up to, say, 3,700 cds? They won't fit in this anymore and you're back to having to use multiple units.

I've got something like these but they're about 2 feet wider and I've
got 2 of them. I just put my dvd's on top of them.

I've also got 2 of these.

Right now I have 9 cd racks and still have piles stacked on the floor. Just about anything would be a better solution. If I end up with a 2nd rack so be it.

In the abstract, though, I don't really want my collection to grow much. I'd like to keep regularly paring back as I add new stuff or at least boxing up and storing the stuff that I don't think I'd listen to too very much.

The nice thing about the Pax is that it's totally modular. You can get one, and all drawers, or, as I plan to do, about 8 or so, and actually put some clothes in some of the drawers.

Having investigated it more than I, do you think it can handle the weight of 8 drawers jammed full of cds? I can recall from the last time moving that a few hundred cds weigh far more than you expect them too.

Yeah, I do. I'm betting on it. I also asked one of the salespeople, and they assured me that it would. Not that that counts for anything (they're salespeople, after all).

But it is a legitimate concern. The walls are particle board, after all. Just don't overscrew the rails, and I think you'll be fine.

Here's another thought -- if you want to upgrade in the future, you can just mimic the design, and you only need to remake the cabinets -- you can reuse the drawers.

Another alternative for us large-quantity type folks:

Winsted stationary and movable storage cabinets

That thing's pretty cool but alas its a no go for me due to carpeting in the room I'm looking to store the cds in. I think I'm going to go to Ikea on the way home from work tonight to decide whether that Pax system is a go or no go for me.

I want a synth wall like that. When I become a big famous rockstar, I will have it.

*bump*

ok, so I'm pretty sure I'm going with 3 of that DeepDiscountDVD rack that holds over 1000.

My next adventure is storing my vinyl. Right now they are in crates, but alas, because of limited space, I have to stack 'em and they are starting to bend. Any suggestions? Would love the nice bookshelves like in High Fidelity :)

i keep pushing the expedit from ikea on anyone who's looking for a good storage system for vinyl. the bonde bookcases are also a good fit for a more upscale look.

and there is also the reliable boltz shelving.

Nice, I'll check that out. There's a IKEA near Balto. near my parents, so maybe next time I'm at their house...

I'd love to just go this route for cds....

Found this for vinyl storage, and very inexpensive.
