I have the 60 gig Ipod runing the newest version of Itunes on a PC.

Goth the Ipod plugged in. The computer and Itunes recognizes the device.
I cann see my Ipod library... I also have some stuff on my itunes library.

I highlight my itunes library and i go to drag it over to the IPOD, but it won't let me do it? rather then getting the arrow when mousing over the ipod icon, I get the circle withthe slash over it...

why can't i transfer tunes to my ipod? i was able to yesterday!?!?

fudge!

maybe there are files that the ipod doesn't support in your itunes music library.

Maybe you grabbed more than 60GB worth?

Dumb/silly question but I have to ask: you are dragging the tunes to the iPod icon that resides in the left column of iTunes, yes?

well if you're trying to copy files from a library to your ipod, they've got to be somewhere. if you have more than 60gb on your external HD (and thus in your libarary), itunes probably won't let you copy it all over.

have you tried ipod forums?

I'm gonna try them..Def should not be a space issue, and the files are on my comp...

I was considering chucking the ipod out the window, but your way might be less destructive!

thanks!...

I have my own question about iPod's/mp3 players, so I'll just ask it here instead of creating another thread.

I'm embarrassingly inept when it comes to technology, it's a miracle that I can operate a microwave, so please feel free to explain this to me like i'm a third grader, because when it comes to this, I basically am.

Ok, so, I go to the store and buy an iPod, bring it home..and then what? How do I get the mp3's on my computer into the ipod? Do I need this itunes everyone is talking about, or some software, a connecter thingy? I just know I'm finally going to buy the thing and then just stare at it, not being able to figure out how to load the fucker with music.

I hope you guys can help me, they sound really amazing!

It comes with a connector that connnects to the USB port on your computer.

It also comes with the Itunes music manager. Its a jukebox similar to Musicmatch, Real Jukebox (or whatever they call it this month), Windows Media Player, or Winamp (with plugins).

You tell Itunes where you keep your mp3 files, it puts them into its database, and then transfers them to the Ipod.

Its a bit more complex if you have more mp3's than will fit on your Ipod, but not much. You create playlists of the stuff you want, and tell Itunes to transfer those.

For all of my bitching about Apple and Itunes, I do admit that they have made the Ipod very user friendly for technophobes

....at least unless you want to transfer video.

mugwump67, thanks a lot, for real...seems less scary now. :)

I still have a question though about itunes..is that something that's for me and my computer only, or am I getting hooked into some online apple system/database? I have some confusion about whether I need to sign up or download something separate than just what I'm buying at the store to get the ipod to work. Is that totally something I've created in my head?

No, Apple's store is integrated into Itunes, but you don't have to use it. You can rip your own CD's, download mp3's from whoever, etc. Your music library is kept on your pc, separately from the apple store.

On occasion Itunes gets updated with bugfixes and new functionality, and there are updates to the software used by the Ipod, and these should usually be downloaded, but they are free of charge. You don't have to stay connected to the internet at all to use Itunes otherwise.

The only limitations regarding online music is that it needs to be coded in mp3 or aac format. None of that Ogg Vorbis or WMA stuff. In addition, the Ipod hardware prevents you from using any of the tracks downloaded from the "xxx unlimited" plans from Napster, Yahoo, Rhapsody, etc.

I hope that helps...but I guess the short answer to the question is that it is totally something you've got in your head.

I'm going to pretend I didn't read this part because otherwise I was actually able to follow along and felt pretty good about myself. This on the other hand made my head spin.

btw, I'm definitely getting one now, understanding it better, so you should totally get a commission from apple or something. :)
