Only given it one spin and yeah i like it. Never heard him before so cannot compare with previous records. Like his voice and a couple of stand out tracks. 6.5/10

When I saw The 97s with jagged and FT, he came out and sand "Question" en francais solo acoustic. He said that would be on the new album. Doubt I will be picking this up.

He's putting "Question" on there? I've only actually heard a couple of songs but have heard from trusted sources that it's pretty bad. If he puts "Question" on there, that's not a good sign.

In french, is en francais means.

Katie was not a fan of this, but I haven't heard it.

Question is on there.

It's the 12th and final song.

The song about himself and Elliot Smith is a good song.

The rest are fine, it's a decent record. Won't change anything and should not make you cringe. Solid middle ground.

The last 97's album was pretty bad, so unless he's showing himself favoritism, the outlook is grim.

Is it anything like his last disc?
It oozed catchy pop, and I loved it.

As did I, timmy, but this isn't sounding too hopeful. We'll probably love it. heh

How is his other stuff...I have one of his records on my Yourmusic queue. Should I "sample" it first? Like '97s btw.

the instigator doesn't really sound a whole lot like the 97s. I guess the songwriting is pretty great, but the songs are a lot less country and a lot more modern pop rock, but super catchy. it's something that teenagers should dig, but dont.

Also, for you MySpacers, he is posting each song before the album comes out so you can at least hear them all before deciding whether or not to buy. I've listened to all of the stuff he has up and overall it sounds ok, not ground-breaking but not terrible. Off the bat, what bothers me, is the inclusion of Question, Singular Girl (albeit a better version that what the 97's put out), and a Jon Brion cover. To me it all points to Rhett losing his touch lyrically.

Anyway, here's a link to his MySpace profile:

I went to see Rhett Miller and "The Believers" last night. I'm not digging his new album all that much but man, he is one of the best showmen out there.

I'd say it's more of a crapshoot. Some good, some bad. On the whole, probably more crap than gold, but there are at least a couple of quality tunes on this album.

I just wish the Old '97s would put out a new album, and NOT in the same vein as Drag It Up! Let's get back to that Fight Songs/Satellite Rides mode, shall we?

np: Shooter Jennings - "Manifesto No. 1"

with "the believer" as my witness, i think rhett's "too far gone" down the triple-a drain to make another balls out rock album.

I agree but I think I'm biased. I sort of like "Brand New Way" even though I admit it's a cheesy song. I think "Fireflies" is pretty well written (though I'm not big on duets for the most part) and the new versions of "Singular Girl" and "Question" are better than the Old 97's versions.

The problem for me is that the best songs are Old 97's songs and I don't know why he put them on there. The new stuff he's written have some of his worst lyrics ever. I mean how do you go from such clever lyrics in Old 97's to "I've had it up to here with nothing, I want everything for a change. Ain't that strange."?

Anyway, some new Old 97's would be nice. Drag it Up had it's moments but seemed like a b-sides album to me.

"Help Me Suzanne" is on the verge of becoming an AC hit. While I like the song okay, it doesn't bode well for an indie rock future for Miller. Probably Triple A-Hot AC from here out.

What does "triple A" mean? I'm in the dark on this one. I assume it has something to do with selling out.

Nah, not selling out. Triple A has a lot of very good artists. It's just dad rock. World Cafe. Stands for Adult Album Alternative. It's alternative for those who don't want noise and who have not adandoned folk rock.

It's the home of the Mark Knopflers, Bruce Cockburns and Van Morrisons of the world. Some excellent artists, but skewing older and singer-songwriter, and not dumping the old guys.
