I think it's self explanatory. I always seem to miss the threads where people discuss what they think about certain albums. Anyway, having one thread should remedy that.

Feel free to rank, rate, or discuss your favorite 2006 albums.

Thanks. Good idea. I'll start with my favourite, and build later:

Super Numeri "The Welcome Table" – 9.6

1. Paper Airplane Pilots - Western Automatic Music
2. Raconteurs
3. Built to Spill
4. Strokes

I need to get out there and hear some more new stuff. My list this year is going to be short. (Good, but short.)

The Strokes - First Impressions Of Earth ---> 7.2

I liked it well enough the first two times I listened to it. But I haven't had any desire to listen to it since. It got filed away into my library and will probably remain there until I force myself to pull it out and listen.

Using the following scale

10: One of the best records of all-time; listmania quality
9: Not a top 100, but still a stone cold classic
8: Maybe not an all-time classic, but would be #1 in most recent years
7: A Very Good Record
6: A Good Record, But One with Questionable Staying Power
5: I Don't Mind Hearing It, but I don't Need to Own It
4: Not Very Good, nothing really stands out even if its not bad
3: Pretty Bad
2: Even Worse
1: Absolutely Awful
0: No Redeeming Quality What So Ever

Norman & Nancy Blake "Back Home In Sulphur Springs" 7.8
Darden Smith "Field of Crows" 5.5

Don't weigh too heavily on the rating, but, yes, I think it is that good. It's really something.

Well, if you go according to Billy's scale, Super Numeri's new album is a stone cold classic.

I don't. But I do suspect Billy might like it.

Using this scale, I'd put that Strokes rekkid at 8.3

I think I'll use this scale as well. Would you mind Darrin, if I did?

I like that Darrin's one of the few guys that has the perspective to leave some gap between his current favs and all time favs, but what's with using the entire bottom half of the scale for all time stinkers

But my scale is a special scale with a formula that requires a calculator and everything, hence the narrow banding of scores.

Maybe we should adhere to one scale and use it ...

when i do end up using a scale...it's just the old school scale:

9.0 and above = A
7.5 = C = average

etc. etc.

i'm not ranking them against any other year or any other list or any other crap. i'm ranking the album i'm listening to on it's own merits...whether it is a 9.7/A+/excellent/stone cold classic or whatever.

i can't understand how a ranking of 7.07 could possibly be a "good" album.

I agree with this as well. I nominate Darrin's scale since he's really one of the only people on this board who has ranked and rated his albums for a while now, and seems successful at it. The only problem is that it may be too radical for some people.

Or we could use the Fastnbulbous scale and just rate all our albums 8+ and 9- :D

I rank my albums in a special way so no one else could rank them as I do unless....

1) I told you how to do it

and

2) You have an awful lot of time on your hands

Like I said it requires a calculator.

This scale is fine if you want to give a pat on the back to a band for being minimally competent. But its of little help in distinguishing what's worth owning and what's just not bad. I don't think anyone's goal is to own every good album so trying to cram every decent album into 3 number rankings isn't very helpful.

how hard is it?

1) the best album
2) the second best album
3) the third best album
4) the fourth best album
.
.
.
n) the nth best album

who cares about arbitrary subjective/qualitative assignments that tell you nothing about whether you will like my nth favorite album or not
