Here's my review:
Overall, I thought this was an excellent album, but I was skeptical at first. It doesn't begin well; 'Clap Your Hands' is not my cup of tea at all. In fact, I fucking hated it. Fortunately, it's less than 2 minutes long so the agony is mercifully brief. However, beginning with the first notes, I do like 'Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away' and I immediately see the David Byrne comparison now, but that's not necessarily a bad thing in my book. It's a natural thing to do, categorizing by simile, compartmentalizing is what the brain does. The other reason I started enjoying this (nearly) right away is because of the singer’s similar vocal styling to Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug who is one of my favourite singers of the moment. The same goes for 'Over and Over Again', I liked it almost immediately and felt hooked. 'Details of the War' sounded very familiar with it's slow building momentum, maybe it's too close to some of the obvious comparison bands, like the Arcade Fire, but I liked the harmonica coupled to the increase in build. 'The Skin of my Yellow Country Teeth' I enjoyed, but once again found the tempo and cadence really familiar. I should say that I don’t necessarily find any obvious derivations to be a negative for me, but I can see now why a lot of people dismiss them for it. An insistence upon originality would doom this band.
The bonanza beginning of 'Is This Love?' was fun and the song only got better for me, but the cadence was, once again, very familiar to me reminding me a bit of Wolf Parade's 'Hearts on Fire' while the ending was reminiscent of 'Happiness is a Warm Gun'. 'Heavy Metal' is one of my favourites; it's a good vocal workout. However, if one is not a fan of that warbling, shaky voice then this song would probably rattle the myelin right off your spinal cord (I'm still walking, though). 'In This Home of Ice' could be my theme song right now and is another stand out favourite. 'Gimme Some Salt' is another groovy song, where he sounds a LOT like David Byrne. 'Upon this Tidal Wave of Young Blood' is a fucking great final song. But once again, it gets a bit over the top, with vocal styling and repetitive chant of 'child stars', reminding me of Van Morrison's 'youbreathin, youbreathout, youbreathin, youbreathout....' on Astral Weeks. But this album did, for me, what few albums generally do and that is end strong. It got consistently better over the course of the album and most importantly, it didn't overstay its welcome. I'm starting to appreciate shorter albums more and more.
This would have been a Top 20 vote for me as I think I'll enjoy it more after a few more spins.
