Shrimp Boat - "River Of Wine"
http://s12.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1OUQ ... PLMSC1KAYP

If you've been paying attention, you've read that it took me a little while to warm up to Shrimp Boat, as a young college DJ. Well, one day it just hit me. And this was the song that was playing when it did.

It was about the 5th time I heard the song, but for some reason, this one time it just really stuck with me. And the rest, as they say, is history. (Or at least a really annoying present-day for a lot of you.)

Hope you listen and like.

I'll check it out Todd. For fuck sakes, you've repped this band enough.

Hey, cool. Like YB, you keep going on and on about this band and I kept ignoring and ignoring, for no real reason. So I listened, found myself intrigued, and went to AllMusic. I must have missed that this is Sam Prekop's former band - I didn't recognize his voice, but there's definitely some musical tendencies that are now obviously due to his presence. So now I'm more intrigued and go to Amazon only to find that like nothing of theirs except a boxset and their first album is available in the US! Is the box an okay thing to get? Several resellers have it for $31, which is not much more than the import remasters that are available.

The box is amazing for an established fan like myself.
As an introduction, I would not recommend it. Although it does cover a LOT of ground... a newbie might find some of it a little shaky.

I would scour the used record stores and www.half.com for a copy of their last album: Cavale (it's the closest they got to the Sea & Cake sound), and work your way backward.

I did post one song ("Country Wagon") from their first album -- the one you mentioned -- which was just re-released last year. And, personally, I love it. But it's a lot more country and raw than what they became.

So, in short, I would buy (in this order):
Cavale
Duende
Speckly
Something Grand
(and DO NOT get Volume 1 -- even if you can find it, it's pretty much a throwaway collection of mostly failed experiments and sound collages.)

Cool! But now that I think about it, I may still end up getting the box - I like taking a plunge on things I'm likely to like anyway. Sometimes deep immersion like that really works out well.

Guess I'm going back to Zia today to see if they happen to have anything . . .

I thought it was a good song, but I actually liked the other two that were posted better than this one. I guess you never can tell what's going to excite you about a band. I never would have picked this one to be the clincher.
