thanks ish, yeah, the folks here are an amazing bunch.

i just got off the phone with one of my kids from there, he promised to say to the deceased's mom and anyone else for me. He's good for it too.

So how have you been feeling?

Mixed. Strong and healthy. But stuck socially, especially, and creatively/productively in this town. Unfulfilled and unfulfilling. Happy but somewhat complacent in my job. It's the best thing I got going, but helps little in remedying the above. Also, the trial of a friend/girlfriend of mine who was killed last summer was supposed to have begun yesterday. So.

All's well. Would just like to regain the positive outlook that so quickly washed away in the last bit. Break outta routine.

Good luck Phil. I don't know you at all but you seem like a really nice guy that deserves a string of good fortune.

I've been hating my job lately too, and have been considering making some changes also. Hang in there.

So what can I do with a B.S. in Music Education and 7 years of teaching experience?

Besides go back to school.

I figure if i can't have a job i love, I ought to have a job I don't love that makes serious bank.

Jesus, Phil...I feel like going Carl from 'SLing Blade' on ya 'You will be happy."

Sometimes all the BS (playing in a band you hate, working in a shit job) is just the means to the final end. You gotta eat, ya know?

And that "Lack of Marketable Skills" comment is a crock. You just gotta figuire out how to market what you got.

We're here for you, brotha.

You'd be surprised. If you don't mind a corporate environment, most large companies have training functions.

Also, much of what makes you successful as a teacher can be leveraged in the non-teaching world--leadership, managing people (your students), communications, long-range planning (your curriculum, course plan, etc.)

If you're serious about a jump into the corporate world, invest the money in a resume service, meet with them in person and let them show you how to leverage your experience and apply it to a new endeavor.

If you weren't thinking of such a radical change, you could probably do the resume service on-line. I used The Vault . Com, and they were excellent. The resume review was $200 and worth every penny. They have an in depth service that costs more, but this is an area and a crucial time early in the process where you don't want to skimp--penny wise/pound foolish and all that.

These outfits confront your circumstances all the time, and they know how to package/position you for your career change. They'll probe the hell out of what you've been doing--teaching, touring, etc. to uncover circumstances where you've managed, organized, planned, led, etc--all of the groovy stuff employers are seeking. You should be pleasantly surprised at how much you've accomplished.

I don't know. Oilfield and medical are very big here. All you need is a good personality. They give you a car stipend, pay for gas, and if you really do well a fat expense account. Also it pays extremely well and your time is very flexiable.

My godfather was teacher for awhile and switched to oilfield sales to make $$$

Phil, you and your undying kindness are one of the things I miss about Chicago.

Listen to Matt, although it will be hard to make that next step towards changing and finding that thing that you want to do, and making the switch to doing it.

If you are looking for a good school, where the kids seemed to care, there was this School down on the south side where the kids seemed eager to learn and the principal was awesome. It was called Shoop Academy. You should find out if they need a music teacher. It was a grade school. Do you only do high school?

I think I'M going to look into this. I know I have marketable skills, especially given that most of what I do is schmooze and research, but selling it to other envioronments is a BIOTCH.

Phil, you are unabashedly QUAL, and were such a help to me after Laura left me. I hope that you find strength and comfort in yourself and your friends as you reevaluate what you are doing with yourself, and I think that grieving for a lost student shows what a good teacher you have been, and shows a lot about your character. You are an awesomely talented musician, so I will kick your ass if you don't use that doing something you are passionate about. And, thankfully, we do have this miscreant community to lean on as well.

As always, call me if you need to talk.

dig it.

Phil - it seems to me like you've written off all teaching, despite the fact that you were obviously happy at this school (despite the strange ending.) Why don't you keep looking for another nice school to teach at?

You're on the right track, Phil. It may be the very beginning of this particular track, but just getting to that point takes a lot. I'm always here for you, even if sometimes it just results in me bumbling like an idiot until I finally spew something meaningful or at least funny.

Let us know as your plans start to take shape. There's a bunch of us here who can try to make your move easier for you. And if you feel you're in a rut, a move is just the sort of thing to help you snap out of it.
Its what led to my move out here and I haven't regretted it for a minute.
