A few questions for anyone that can help....

Is there camping on site? Is it clean?

How far is it from hotels/airport?

Is there a discount if you buy tickets for both days?

Thanks, D

Location: any suggestions?
In order:
Yes. Dunno.
4-5 hrs from LAX. There are hotels w/in 5 mins of the site, but availability is starting to become an issue.
From what I remember, there is, but I'll do some checking.

You thinking of making the trek?

-your best bet is to buy a 2-day pass. it's a bit cheaper (but not by much).

-don't camp. you can't drink there. and there's a "curfew" or something like that.

-as far as hotels, i'd start booking them right now. if you sleep on reserving your hotels, you'll end up having to book something in palm springs which is about 20-30 minutes away (but traffic isn't pretty). here is the hotel we stay at every year: Indian Palms Resort (that goes for you too, chad)

see where monroe st. is on the map? the venue is east of monroe about a mile away. it's within walking distance, and if there are still rooms available, book it. TRUST ME the parking situation is NOT pretty. they just park all the cars together in the lot and it's a bitch and a half to get out because they close the streets. we usually just walk to the venue because from previous experience, it was hard for us to get back to the hotel.

if the hotel is booked, i suggest searching hotels within 1-5 miles radius from that address (to give you a general idea).

-airports: LAX- about 2 1/2 hours (without traffic) so in angelinos terms, that means 3-4 hours.

there's also the ONTARIO airport and DOWNTOWN PALM SPRINGS airport. palm springs is about 20 minutes from indio, and ontario is about 1 hr. away. you might be able to find something flying in/out of ontario, but you'll have to rent a car possibly. unless you arrange other ride situations.

anything else you need to know, let me know. AIM: fakeplanettelex

<--coachella expert. ;) been going every year (except the first).

p.s. if you make the trek d, we gotta meetup!!!!!!!!!!!
p.p.s. Coachella info

I was going to say no way its 4-5 hours from LAX. I would have guessed closer to 2-2.5 hours normally. And I don't think the freeways you need to take are superbusy so traffic wouldn't normally be a huge issue.

I don't remember there being a discount on the tickets. My bro bought the tickets and I paid him back for mine.

I didn't care a great deal for the camping but it was passable. I had some stuff stolen from my rental car, but that was my fault though for leaving it in the back seat for the world to see rather than the trunk. It was fairly clean. From my experience, they were pretty good about keeping the port-a-potties(sp?) and mobile shower rooms clean. My least favorite part about camping (other than getting robbed), was the checking in. Just don't get there too "on time." Either get there early (early morning the day before the concert) or late (shortly before the concert begins). Unless of course you like standing around in a long line for 2 hours with luggage. My bro and I actually lucked out with the checking in but I won't get into all that...

My bro and I flew into LA and drove to Coachella from there. It was about a 2 hour drive from what I recall.

The weather was beautiful that weekend I must say.

thanks a lot for the help guys.

yes. i'm coming out this year with a few friends. i'm soooooo stoked. Dri, and anyone else, I'd love to link up.

gonna look into hotels now. camping seems like it could be a hassle.

is there a train or bus that goes there so we don't have to rent a car? or is a car the only option?

how was the weather? does it cool down at night?

oh, and yeah.... THE CORAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:)

keep me posted on your plans... if you are staying out here for more than just the weekend, one word: AMOEBA. i'll show you guys around.

renting a car would be your best bet. that way you don't have to rely on other people... and if you're heading out with a few people, then cost should be cheaper ya know?

coachella plans go like this for my crew & i: head out friday night, party / chill / geek out over the lineup. breakfast at the hotel, head over there around 1-2. rinse, lather, repeat. head back sunday night (and this year i am NOT going to be dd. i've been dd the past 3 years damn it).

weather: HOT AS HELL. last year wasn't too bad... it gets to be around 100+ during the day, a bit chilly at night. typical desert weather.

depends when you're heading out... if you're heading from la on sat, no way in hell i'd recommend it. normally on fri night, it takes about 2 1/2 hrs. the traffic is the worst getting out of la on the 10 until you pass the 626 area. then it fluctuates back/forth. i hate driving to the 909, 951, whatever it's called.

We usually fly into the Palm Springs airport on Friday night--if you book early it's not that much more expensive than Ontario or LAX.

Do not camp---it turns into a dust bowl as people leave in their cars at the end of the day.

The hotel Puma is recommending is already booked for the entire weekend--we checked 3 or 4 weeks ago. Check out the Best Western in Indio--it probably still has vacancy and provides frequent shuttles to and from the venue all weekend. We stayed there last year and found the accommodations pretty decentl

Yes, there's a bit of discount if you buy for both days, but not huge.

5 stages (2 outdoor, 3 tents), one of which is dedicated to techno.

Marco, thanks a ton for the info. I'll call the Best Western first thing in the morning. The shuttle sounds perfect. Saves us renting a car.

5 stages.

2 outdoor= main and second biggest stage

3 indoor= one is the "electronic" tent.

yeah we booked that hotel when we checked in last year (yes, we're crazy) so it fills up pretty damn fast since it's so close to the venue (and it's a really nice hotel). but i'm sure you'll be able to find something. :)

2 day pass is usually $150. including ticketbastard fees, around $178 or so.

It's a few more bucks than that -- $160 not including bastardization fees.

DON'T CAMP

It's a tiny tent on asphalt underneath huge stadium lights which are on all night.

When looking for a hotel any city between Palm Springs & Coachella can work I've stayed in Palm Springs & Cathedral City. You don't really hit traffic till you get close, but it's like a parking lot. If you're coming in on the 10 just don't get off where they tell you to.

Oh and if you stay in Palm Springs keep an eye out for Rip Taylor

I am also 99% sure I'm coming out to CA for Coachella this year.

Aural graciously offered a spot on the hotel floor in the room she's sharing with like 5 people, or I can live larger and split a room with other Obnerites if there are others coming out. If you want to find something to share (or have something you want to split), email or PM me...

Anyhow, I'm in for meeting up with everyone as well. Looking forward to the line-up announcement.

PS: BTW, I was just able to 'preemptive strike' book a room at puma's recommended hotel @ $199 night with 2 queen beds. Marco said they told him it was sold out, but that seems to have changed. I can split it w/ 1-2 others if you PM me pronto.

Line up is supposed to be announced within the next 10 days, I believe. Tickets go on sale early next month.

Mental friends, eh? Wait 'til you meet the friends Dri and I share. Ha!
