I think DCW has some of the sharpest pop songs of the past few years on it. I like that B & S figured out they can't keep mining the same fey/heart-on-sleeve territory forever and now mix it up. That doesn't mean Push Barman isn't brilliant, because it is. It's just they'd get aggravating if they spent the rest of their career as quiet mumblers. As long as they continue to mix it up, I'll stay interested.

With that criteria in mind, I think that you will really dig this new one Phil.

We may be in the minority, but I'm also of the opinion that DCW was at least as good as if not their best work and a fine collection of "sharp" pop songs (your words)

agreed. and i LOVE everything else they've put out (minus storytelling).
also agree on the goodness that is the life pursuit, and that billy g most likely will not enjoy it as veers further down the "pop" road that dear catastrophe waitress had.

I have to admit that I find it a bit strange that some of you are being snide regarding someone's ranking system, presuming that one attempt at musical quantification is inherently inferior to another.

The new *improved* Radcliffe rating scale:

Pine tree
Lexus
Aching loins
Skid mark
Measles
Poontang
Facial wart
Skinny chicken
Tuba spit
Black splotch

So on this scale, the new Strokes album is measles and a half. Clear enough?

Well, I don't like the 'half'. Too 'New Math' for my liking. Measles and club foot would probably be better.

i sometimes wonder if people ever just sit down and actually enjoy music, instead of trying to "rate it", or fit it in some end-of-the-year list.

I only rate when people ask stuff like what are your top 20 new polka celtic afro funk techno remixes or something. Rest of the time is just listening for pleasure.

The desire to hear every new release that anyone anywhere likes is symptomatic of this critic wanna-be syndrome too. I've at least escaped that aspect.

i began limiting the # of albums i buy/dl last year just so i can fully-enjoy everything that comes my way. i was startin' to feel rushed..

but i still rank my albums. been doin that since 1984 :)

not really. that's simply a desire to hear new music.

at least it's not wasting time trying to figure out "where it fits". i guess i can understand why some people may feel the need to, but personally i think it's boring.

see, what's the point? missing out on some music so that you don't have to feel rushed to create your end-of-the-year list?

no thanks. to each their own though.

Whatever dude. I think you understand what he was saying and I don't think it had anything to do with making a year end list. I think it had a lot more to do with actually fully digesting everything he bought/dl'ed and enjoying it rather than moving on to something else just for the sake of hearing as much as he could.

You may have an insatiable thirst for new discoveries. But I see you having opinions about most new releases discussed and a fair amount of those opinions are negative. So if you want to spend time listening to a lot of crap along with the stuff that you do like whether its so you can express an opinion or because you're afraid you're going to miss out on something then good for you. But I'd much rather be more selective and actually enjoy 95%+ of what I listen to.

i like how the majority of this rating thread are arguments over different rating systems.

This would make year-end lists too easy. I abstain.

Also, I got nuthin', 2006-wise.

Oh there's no way I'm updating this. Its just easy to do because I've only heard two 2006 releases at this point.

It's official. We're all using our own rating scale. ;)

And chill out guys, I created this thread because I like to see how everyone rates / ranks a particular album, etc. I find it helpful in discovering new music and knowing what to buy the next time I'm at the record store. For many of us, this site has become very useful in finding new music. So have fun with it.

And it's not about year end lists, Dalen so settle down before I show you who the real man in the relationship is. ;)

The Television Personalities - My dark places

Just booked my tickets to see them 9th March.

This is a big deal for me.

This scale is fine if you want to give a pat on the back to a band for being minimally competent.

He did say it was a school scale. Pretty much defines the educational system's ratings, anyway. Have I ever mentioned that I'm extremely cynical?

I think that I'm gonna rate at least 7 albums between 9 and 10 this year, and then have none of them show up on my year-end list. Seems to work.

Rads, I really like your "playful" system. I'd just like to see it a bit more defined. If not, I'm gonna find myself having to continue to go back to it to see if "measles" or "facial wart" is better. I like the concept, though. I'd also like to know the significance of "pine tree".

That's pretty much what I was going for. A few people were adamant that rating scales were such personal things that they shouldn't be questioned. But to me that just means CDs are being assigned random numbers that tell me nothing - so why stop at numbers? How about some random words?

And for what it's worth, I didn't mean to imply that "pine tree" represented the pinnacle of achievement. That might be "measles".
