Hell yeah, dawg. I used to drive through Orange Mound (birthplace of Memphis Crunk) every day on the way to school. In fact, I once rolled a joint and smoked it while driving through OM (literally, rolled it while I was driving) and blasting Tribe Called Quest. Man, I miss dirty ol' Memfrica. :(

Don't act like I don't know Orange Mound ;) 8Ball and MJG Comin Out Hard was a staple of my high school riding around blunt-smokin days.

And that first Triple 6 is a true CRUNK rekkid. "I bet you won't HIT a MUTHAFUCKA, HIT a MUTHAFUCKA HIT EM!" I can remembering going open;y crazy to that one year before the UGA v. Auburn game.

i certainly hear more of dancehall in reggaeton than any kind of roots and coulture vibe.

i like dancehall in the same way i like reggaeton: three or four off the chain singles at the peak of the evening. Neither one of them get much airplay chilling around the house.

I love how there's a kidz bop-type reggaeton comp out now.

I'm a longtime fan of roots/rock steady, but the dancehall influences are for some other dude who isn't me.

I like my reggae Tosh-ified, so I guess this genre's gonna have to branch out a bit for me to pay attention.

Oh, plus the fact I'm a lyrics guy what doesn't speak Spanish. Yeah, that's a barrier.

I bet y'all would hate the Nortec Collective series.... nothing like a rockin' tuba.

This latina likes reggae AND latin music, but that reggaeton shit has gotta go.

I think Jewels is right, it is a young music (even though it's sorta been around 20 years) but it is just starting to give voice to the postcolonial latino youth majority that is wrestling with the white technocapitalist hegemony... oops, never mind.

Andale.

more like it's giving a voice to criminal minded, poorly dressed, and annoying latino youth.

those wanna-be thungs are good for a laugh though.

Got that right. When I want to hear the exact same riff done over and over ad naseum I want it to have some fake-ass mysticality tacked on to it. That's why I'm old school rasta. Small axe, i.

Right... those wanna-be thungs who do stoop labor in the fields at minimum wage, no medical benefits, 6 days a week in season, skin cancer and pesticide poisoning.... so we can have affordable food in our markets and not have agribusiness move everything off shore.

Right... and they are poorly dressed too. Right.

Just for the record, my statement about not being to hot on reggae was in response to this question:

…rather than trying to make a connection between reggae and reggaeton.

No, what motivates them is 1) their own hunger and survival, and 2) supporting extended families.

That our middle and elite classes' comfort and prosperity are predicated on their toil is an unintended (on their part) byproduct.

I hardly intended for a thread about music to turn into an opportunity for some to spew vitriolic, bigoted comments.

OK, this a slow high pitch right down the middle, that if hit, won't help the issue.

Let me try this:

1) You've great taste in music... especially the electronica ambient stuff. I look for your posts with interest.

2) We can be ligtht spirited, respectful, when having these important conversations about justice, culture, and challenging assumptions. The unexplored life is not worth living, right?

3) You missed my point. I work with thousands and thousands of Latino immigrants who do very difficult labor, often at a cost to their health, at minimum wage or even under. A national report just released this week measured that over half of these day laborers that wait on the street for work have worked and not been paid, and worry about injury knowiing that they have no health insurance. Our economy is being forced to depend on these undocumented for cheap labor. Quite seriously, if you eat lettuce, strawberries, apples, oranges... and they are grown in this country or Canada, brown hands who receive very low pay have picked them for you. There is a much greater likelihood that these brown hands are handing you food, not lighting a crack pipe.

4) After work, crank it up, cumbias, reggaeton, while the bodies may ache what better remedy than music and dance. We all here at Obner know that, yes?

p.s. I will admit certain challenges with the drum machines.
