i got a bit of Tindersticks from Colinswood and then rushed out to by Curtains. This is really really good, but i've never heard them mentioned around here. It's just fantastically dark music that just burns slowly along, with lots of great strings bits (i normally don't like strings, i think they ruin songs [except, of course, when the strings are the main instrument, a la, Dirty Three]). But anyway, it's great.

it's rare to find music this delicate and sad. Genuinely sad. As a long-time sad music lover, i've been listening to too much happy music lately. Tindersticks has got me back on the right track.

It really reminds me of Nick Cave but not in a rip-off way at all. The music, like the Bad Seeds, seems to be almost its own genre. It's completely timeless.

Rented Rooms, the second track from Curtains, is one of their more uptempo songs.

Tindersticks are one of my all-time favourite bands. I love, love the dark and moody ambience they bring.

I like them a lot, too. Except sometimes it seems like it's all the same song.

Agreed. I have 4 or so of theirs, and I think you could take any song off any of them and insert it into one of the others without being able to tell the difference. But when I'm in the mood, the guy's voice is mesmerizing.

When it comes to Tindersticks, you MUST listen to "My Oblivion," from their latest album. It is a track of sweeping grace and beauty; rarely does a song appear that matches its intensity.

hmm... my only exposure to them has been with kcrw's sessions and i've tagged them as nick cave rip-offs based on that. i will probably get to these mp3s when i get home tonight.

Tindersticks are incredible. One of my favorite bands of the last decade or so. That moody and excellent sounding second album is an alltime favorite of mine, but they're all good. They owned it on their Bloomsbury Theatre recording that encompassed those great first two albums. Right now today "Simple Pleasure" is my favorite, with the hot chicks singing backup and giving them more of a Motown feel. But I can't deny my love of that "Travelling Light" song that a couple people mentioned from the second album, with Carla Torgerson (of the also highly undervalued Walkabouts) providing the femme fatale counterpoint. Or one of the other knockouts from that same album that made its way onto a film they scored and also later made an appearance on The Sopranos, "Tiny Tears". Beautiful stuff ...

You've been thinking about the time, you've been dreading it
But now it seems that moment has arrived
She's at the edge of the bed, she gets in
But it's hard to turn the opposite way tonight

Tiny tears make up an ocean
Tiny tears make up the sea
Let them pour out, pour out all over
Don't let them pour all over me

I am a huge fan of sad music. But I find Tindersticks to be schmalzy and overproduced. The guy's voice, tear laden and breaking, seems to be just too emotive.

So why do I keep buying them to listen to this same song over and over again.

Okkervil River is boring. This is better but not as good as i was expecting - they dont have the sardonic humour i love in Nick Cave

no they're obviously not as talented as Nick Cave. Cave is without doubt the most talented lyricist and perhaps even the greatest songwriter of all time. But you knew that already
