I used to think so until I saw Aaron's new avatar. In that lighting, with his shirt off, Aaron is definitely "the cute one."

how about piebald's if it wasn't for venetian blinds it would be curtains for all of us.

finch maybe? there's also this band who i knew in florida called my hotel year that were definitely the new brand of "emo" but rocked a little harder and were wicked tight live.

Story Of The Year toured with Linkin Park, P.O.D., and Hoobastank, so I doubt anyone would file 'em under emo (not that there's anything wrong with that). SOTY are pretty much aimed at the heart of modern rawk radio, so your best bet for a substitution would be something else that gets played on those stations, like Brand New, Simple Plan, or even Alkaline Trio or the Transplants. For a longer shot, what about the Waking Eyes Video Sound album? It's big fuzzy modern rawk, but it's also slightly reminiscent of both Hot Hot Heat and the Beatles (well, they try anyway) and isn't completely terrible.

Most of these bands are equal or worse than them.

How about Jawbreaker? Maybe the Dear You reissue or 24 Hour Revenge Therapy. Also, someone else mentioned the Get Up Kids. 4 Minute Mile is a pretty damn fine LP, and I think it's sort of the starting point for when emo turned into bad mall emo. So, it might be a good bridge from the crap he's listening to.

How old is the kid? Sounds like he may like loud shit, so here's my disjointed list of crap that is probably not much help:

Helmet
Faith No More
Suicidal Tendencies
Therapy?
Clutch
Face to Face
The Descendents
Bad Religion
Social Distortion
Superdrag

This Story of the Year shit fucking BLOWS.

Thank you.

I'd go with Get Up Kids. Either Something To Write Home About or On A Wire.

Or Alkaline Trio.

I was too lazy to get involved in the 97th "good emo" thread. Scorchie has the best advice so far.

I really have no idea what emo is. I have, however, always heard that Hüsker Dü were the forebearers to emo and thought that would be close enough.

All I do know is that all these bands you are listing as "emo", of the ones I've heard, I don't like any of them. A buncha whiney shit.

Another vote for Get Up Kids.

Also, Promise Ring s/b a staple of any emo fan's listening. Very Emergency, etc.

But, this is what I would do: get him what he wants, but *also* get him what you think he'll grow to appreciate with time - maybe the Crooked Rain reissue or Zen Arcade, etc. Hell, Arcade Fire and Bright Eyes are a stone's throw from emo, but still carry some substance...

True. The first Arcade Fire cd is very emo. That's why I was surprised when I started hearing things about Funeral around these parts.

My God it's not like he's doing drugs. Get him the stinkin Story of the Year cd you "just too indie" anal blast!

How'd you feel if you asked for the new Arcade Fire and got the new Radio 4 instead?

Anyway you should get him Clarity, the new Taking Back Sunday and Story. Trust me he'll love you. Yellowcard is also premium, you may snob your nose but you'll turn your brother into an absolute pimp.
