Covered/Discovered or whatever the hell it's called?

Any impressions?

I don't see it on any year-end lists, but I'm a big Danny fan. I wanna know.

I cannot find it anywhere. I work in a record shop and I still can't get ahold of it. Whenever I try to order it, it comes up as inaccesible.

Maybe it's a Canadian thing.

There's some really good stuff on that, but I'm not sure how it would figure into year end lists, being a comp and all.

The Bright Eyes cover, believe it or not, is a high point IMO. Also Beck, Tom Waits, Flaming Lips/ Sparklehorse, Mercury Rev, and some others are really nice. The TV on the Radio track is pretty disappointing though.

yeh i mentioned it in my stop smiling year-ender. its such a neat album. at first, i listened the originals and thought, this guy is ridiculous. but then after repeated listens, i found that daniel johnston is not only instable, but an amazing songwriter. i love this double disc, you should get it. its got beck, tom waits, m. ward, tv on the radio... so great.

So this was your intro to Danny?
Nice.

I "discovered" him when I was DJing in college around 1991. We had a 7" on the SOL label of Danny singing "Speeding Motorcycle" over the telephone to a radio studio, where Yo La Tengo backed him up, in studio. I think that version can now be found on that Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo collection.

I went out and found a cassette copy of Yip/Jump Music at my local used shop, which I picked up for 99ยข. I've loved the guy ever since.

Even saw him play his first-ever Chicago show a few years back.

Welcome to Danny's World, Katie. It's a beautiful, scary place. But ultimately, soft and cozy.

I really like that CD as well.... the Beck & Mercury Rev covers are the shebang...
And "Daniel" ain't half bad either - it's just so much more convenient for me to own a greatest hits of his than to try and piece together everything along the way...

This was my intro to Johnston, easily on my year-end list even though it's a comp. The covers are nice, but more as a way to ease into the originals.

I listened to almost the entire double-album in Reckless Records in Chi-town. Really liked it alot. Asked my parents for it for Xmas. If I'm dissapointed I'll be burning their house down, after I take my presents of course.
