As I have stated before, I have a new computer and installing things a little at a time. I used Winamp on my old computer but it seemed to use a lot of random memory and would turn off at strange times. I don’t feel that will be a problem with my new Cadillac but I want the best now. I’m using the pre installed Windows one now but want to get away from Microsoft unless this is all I need.

I use MediaMonkey

Advantages: Handles large music databases (50000 tracks+) well; Ridiculously fast tag look-up, nice design, integrates with winamp.

Disadvantages: Not free (<$20)

Foobar.

+: Free, low memory use, highly customizable
-: custom settings come with a steep learning curve, documents like this one help you quite a bit.

I agree with Sketch that Foobar is great, low mem imprint, free, and highly highly customizable But like he said, the learning curve is steep indeed.

This document is also considered a great start (although the original is in french and this translation has a couple of rough spots).

I'm with Sketch & the Motor City Madman on the foobar tip, yo.

this seems like an ok thread to ask:

Does anyone know what an .rmj file is?

Our server here has a bunch of music files that people have dumped on, and half of it is rmj and I can't open them. I should just figure out a way to convert them to mp3! Anyone know what program they are made for?

RealMedia Jukebox.

Looks like dbPower Amp can do the job, but I only briefly Googled. Link

Fu, I used dbPowerAmp, and love it, I installed that codec, and it only lets me convert to a .ra file and not from one. wtf?

Time to check out Sketch's link.

dang, all that stuff costs money.
I think I'd rather just re-rip the discs.

i use winamp because it hooks up well with shoutcast. it hogs a lot of memory/cpu sometimes though trying to hold nearly 24k mp3s in it.

i'd use foobar if it hooked up to shoutcast well, and was easy "blank out" and "restock" after adding a bunch of mp3s to my pc. there's probably a way, but i didn't find it.

iTunes, baby. teh lame to tech-oriented folks, but I like EASY. It works with all the file types I care about, you can download stuff off the music store pretty seamlessly, and now even plays video. If you have an iPod then you already use iTunes, so why get anything else?

If you need something else though I recommend MediaMonkey. It's free, supports a ton of file types, and has a good interface.

I wanted to say thanks for the suggestions. I downloaded Foobar but that learning curve is indeed steep and will tackle it here in the next couple of days. I wanted something easier but in the end I know I will be very happy I went with the very best. Didn’t know it was a MP3 burner as well. Have been using dbPowerAmp as well but the trial 30 days things has run out. So I was going to transfer my old version from my old computer to this one but haven’t got around to transferring thing over yet. Not enough hours in the day.

I have iTunes preinstalled on my new computer but don’t want to use it either. I still use a Disc Walkman and will update one day but not yet.

MediaMonkey looks interesting. Idiopathic said it cost money so I didn’t even bother but than Old Kentucky said free. I now see they have the same limited offer dbPowerAmp has for MP3s but they say you can get around it and tell you how. This one looks really good and fairly easy to get up and running but going the Foobar route since I already downloaded it.

Thanks again everyone!

You can find a serial to unlock the program on the internet, if you want, just to "see" what the full version of MM has to offer.

Also, you could make do with an older version of WinAmp before it became bloated. For instance, version 2.5 lite.

Since we are bumping threads which have good research value...

It is free only in version 10 and earlier. In the newer version there is a 30 day trial to be able to make mp3's.

PM me if anyone wants a copy of the version 10 install file.
