So I've always liked to think that I know a bit about music (at least relative to most around me...I'm alone a lot of the time) but I got stumped by my brother-in-law the other day. He came into town and asks me if I've got anything by The Four Horsemen. He says it's pretty rockin' and he's been searching new and used bins in Edmonton and apparently it's out of print. I profess ignorance and search their bio from allmusic. As it turns out they were on Def American and were produced by Rick Rubin. They only cut a couple of albums before jail and heroin overdoses torpedoed the band.

Has anyone heard these guys? Based on the description of their music and the fact that Rubin produced, I think I need to hear this band. Also the brother in law said he'll kill me if I don't get it for him.

Yeh, that was ex-DOA drummer Dimwit's band just before he bit it. I can't remember much else about 'em, except that they were borderline hair metal - waaaay closer to Bon Jovi than DOA.

I know that's a death knell for you, but a borderline hair metal sound is all right by me. I'm going to check ebay and see what I can track down.

And Loogar was right, if anyone was going to know something about an obscurity like this, it would be you.

Jeezus. I just read that Allmusic bio - I didn't realize the grisly bad luck those guys had.

Also didn't realize the bassist was from Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Reaction. While you're checking things out on e-bay, look for their Tattooed Beat Messiah album - it brings exactly the sorta RAWK that your bro-in-law would appreciate (with a fair amount of humor too).

Not so cheap, but if you're desperate, there's several copies of at least two of their albums.

There on ebay, used and relatively cheap ~$10 CDN. I'm thinking of ordering.

Came up short on the Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Reaction, but I'm putting that on the radar based on the allmusic reviews. It does sound like RAWK!

I've got both the Four Horsemen debut and the Zodiac Mindwarp Debut. Let me know if you want me to burn you a copy. Four Horsemen is sleazy boozy fun. More a mix of hard drivin' southern rock than hair metal.

Zodiac Mindwarp reminded me of European bands trying to be hard rock Doors like the Cult's later albums.

Jeff's right...they weren't hair-metal-ly. More "biker" than "mascara". Think Circus Of Power, not Bon Jovi.

"Rawkin' iz mah bizness...& bizness iz gooood..."

Didn't have time to read the bio...IIRC, the singer got really sick ( Maybe even died ) at one point, right?

Radcliffe is gonna hook me up with the Zodiac Mindwarp, but I'd sure love to hear the Four Horsemen debut. That would be much appreciated :D

Yeah I think I've only heard that Nobody Said It Was Easy album. I tried to find it awhile ago on Soulseek but only came up with a few songs. They're definitely not hair metal, more like The Cult circa Electric with a southern flavor.

Yeh, I agree with that description. Except that I consider the Cult (circa Electric) to be hair metal. And the southern flavor runs more to Molly Hatchet than Lynyrd Skynyrd. But some folks'll consider all those things positive traits (I'm looking at you, Diggity ;)).

The bassist was in The Cult for a time, only touring I think.
I have it too on Colinswood. I could get youa YSI if ya need.
Bluesy kind of dirty rawkin bar band. They sort of remind me of a Black Crowes song a little, that I can't put my finger on right now.

I'd take a ysi, definitely! It would be much appreciated, I'll surprise my inlaw with some rawk here.

Actually, I'm not much on Southern stuff. And I'd say yer idea of "hair metal" is outta whack - which is fine with you, I'm sure. :D
