This guy takes aerial photographs with a method that makes them look like weird miniature models. Here's Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles:

the interesting thing about some of these, and the part that makes it work so well, is the short depth of field in theses shots. If the focus had been throughout the entire image then it wouldn't have the same impact or look. But because the focus is on a specific focal plane you pay attention to it more.

Thanks Fu.

I assume they're retouching the bejeezus out of these to eliminate and stray dirt, clutter, etc, so that the illusion holds up?

they weren't necessarily heavily retouched. i'd imagine you could achieve a lot of the effect by messing with saturation levels and such.

The last three are Japanese. The robots who stock the Panty Vending machines dispose of all litter on their days off.

Yeah, my guess is that the colours have been played with some they look more saturated and more closely resemble the colours used in model sets.

edit: Oh... and thanks for posting this. They fucking ROCK.

I like the desert one. It looks like you could just pick up those little cars and play with them. :)

Cute... but they also seem a little cheesy (except Santa Monica). They look a little like the Todd Haynes' Karen Carpenter Story.. or even in some weird way South Park.

I saw an exhibition at the Peabody in Salem a couple months ago... aerial photos that were zen-like in their minimalist geometry. Here's the link, though seeing them small doesn't do them justice... they were ten feet tall.

minimalism > postart techno preciousness
