sly is supposedly getting some achievement award, so i think everyone's jumping on the rumor mill that the band will get back together for the night. i highly doubt it, but i definitely won't complain if it happens.

pixes - head on (originally jesus and mary chain)

someone always brings this up and i cannot fathom how they can think it. c'mon, have you people ever even listened to the jesus & mary chain or is it just because of some ridiculous love for the pixies? this is almost the equivalent of thinking the B-side of the joshua tree is better than the A.

I like the pixies, but I hate their version of Head on. I think Johnny Cash's version of Hurt is the only one listed that I agree is better than the original so really none of these are "undeniably" better.

So... you're a Doris Day fan?
I never woulda thunk.

I'm not sure I've heard Doris' version so I can't agree for that reason. I like Sly, but I wouldn't call myself a big fan of his so I'm not sure I'd agree. Have you seen the rumors though that they might be reforming and playing at the grammys.

The world could use that right now.
Good just to hear that Sly is well enough that those rumours can even be floated out there.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen Cohen called "campy."

I completely agree. I love the Pixies, but their version sucks compared to the original.

Falstaff - "Brand New Key"
(it's a hidden track on their first album and makes an already campy song even campier.... and just much better.)

:D

But I simply cannot imagine ANY version being UNDENIABLY better than the Kinks' original. Having heard it recently, it is simply one of the greatest songs of the entire rock era, IMO.

Overplayed, yes.
But godDAMN is it great.

Just refuting the "undeniable" aspect of your assertion. And, yes, I admit it is sight-unseen(heard), but see my argument above.

Much love,
Toddie

I can't go along with this. I like Jimi's cover okay, but still like the original better. As a matter of fact, and coincidentally, I listened to the Dylan version just yesterday and was thinking about how good it is (and how it's too bad most people only know the Jimi version).

The Pixies are one of my favorite bands of all time, yet I can't go along with this. It's far from the best thing the J&MC put out, but I still like it much better than the Pixies version, which I think is alright, but not better than the original, let alone close to being undeniably better.

I may be the only person on earth who doesn't really love Hendrix.

The Devo version of Satisfaction is awesome in its own right, but it ain't better than the original.

I will say that I do LOVE the Jason & The Scorchers version of Absolutely Sweet Marie...I wish anything they did lived up to that, tho.

Todd--

Get yourself a copy of the "Shangri-La" tribute album--it came out on Communion in '88. There's not a single weak track on it, and the song selection is quite deep. It's the best tribute album I've ever heard.

I am generally not a big fan of Cud, but damn if they don't nail "Lola" and make it their own.

Other highlights from the comp--The Reegs (i.e. Mark Burgess of Chameleons UK/Sun & The Moon) "See Me Friends", The Fleshtones "It's Too Late", The Mock Turtles "Big Sky" and "Shangri La", The Cateran "Days" and "Tired of Waiting".

Concurring with da Senator'.....

Conversely, the version by U2 is perhaps the worst cover in the history of recorded music.

Not to cop out on the whole "Head On" debate but I think that I like both versions equally, and I most definitely heard and owned the Chain version when it came out. I remember being pretty stoked when Trompe Le Monde came out that the Pixies covered it. Anybody else remember that they used to play the video of the Pixies version on regular MTV? (i especially remember seeing it in the mornings in probly late '92, early '93) It was sort of a 'hit'.

Not really a cover since Elvis didnt write it, but I've always enjoyed Dwight Yoakam's version of "Suspicious Minds"

ROCK AND ROLL

STOP THE TRAFFIC

I enjoy the U2 version only b/c of my morbid love for the Rattle and Hum movie, but I get where you're going.

i think the pixies version gives the song exponentially more energy.

oh hell yeah. the guitar solo into that drum fill back into the chorus is fucking ROCK!

but the Chain version also has that snide delivery that only they can do plus Automatic will always be one of my favorites. Its like a cycle of songs that all fit together perfectly.

edit: plus i dropped a lot of A with Automatic as the soundtrack and you can't get those hours back.

Linus Of Hollywood - "Goodbye To Romance"
Makes Ozzy's cheezy metal ballad into a simply perfect pop song; the way it should be.
