consider this a warning - the divorce process is really horrible. my ex and i were on great terms by the time we got our divorce (we'd both moved on and were great friends). it was eleven months between separation and divorce and we still cried like a couple of bitches when we got the paperwork finalized. with the exception of deaths in my family/immediate friends, i'd say that it was the single worst day of my life. it's been seven months and we're still affected by it.

you might dislike her a whole lot, but prepare yourself for all the feelings that will inevitably flood you when you're in court.

Yuck. I don't even want to be there for it (I don't think that I have to in TX).

He graduated last year. I don't know a whole lot of specifics other then he studied sea urchins. I think he's doing a post doc right now. His name is Jim Balhoff.

As I recall, he'd just started on the Ph.D. track of his academic career - wasn't this his first year (back) in Texas, only returning after getthing is MS in Oregon? - so, it would be minor monetary involvement. Especially if he's on a grad./doctoral student stipend from the univ.

There is the matter that that amount wouldn't cover most basic living expenses. So, if the gal was the primary breadwinner, she could play that like an executive who's leaving his wife for his younger admin. ass. "Oh, your Honor, she was just a housewife... I supported the household on my own".

She hasn't helped me pay for shit - I've been supporting her almost entirely these past 5 years.

Then it is she who is served. I take it you just let her take the furniture out of the kindness of your heart?

Agreed, dude.

At this point, too, I think she might sue him for alimony.

And if he's sorry enough to let it happen, then obviously he gets what he deserves, but I think babe or some other Austinite might need to hustle over and shake the man up.

Whatever I do I'm going to do so I can still look her father in the eye and shake his hand, because I am very close to him, even if never again his daughter.

i'm still looking for cds from my collection! never leave the ex alone when he/she is packing up cds. my ex tried to take my entire beta band collection and some earlimart eps.

alimony is tricky to get when kids aren't involved. if she has a degree and a job, she probably won't get anything because she can support herself. if not, then she might throw some punches your way...

Yeah there wont be any alimony.. and you might not have to show up in court- when I was divorced all we did was send papers in.

Colin, all I can say is- take the high road- regardless of what some of these people say.. because in the end, you have to sleep with it. During my divorce most people said I was being taken advantage of, that she was insensitive etc- perhaps, but it was someone I spend time with and loved. So sure she might have gotten the better deal but years down the line, remarried and with twins on the way, I can honestly say I am better for it.

Yeah. Protect yourself, but I wouldn't start up legal battles. It's just not worth it. I am honestly still feeling the physical reprecussions from a near-legal battle that occured about 8 years ago (with my landlady and subletters of my apt). Legal battles will just make you preoccupied and paranoid; they won't fix emotional hurt either.

Take care. Treat yourself well.

<--- (just narrowly avoided a legal battle from a band-'divorce'. made me unhappy and stressed for months.)

Seriously dude. I had a psycho law student up in arms because she got in a fight with the psycho landlady. Of course my roomie & I were legally responsible because we had subletted the place... but my roomie was scared to death of the law student, etc., etc.... = calls at work from screaming landlady, massive headaches, and a cyst.
