So, yeh, I realize many of you Obnizzles are extremely open-minded and like to defend every piece of shit band that pops up on your iPod, but here's a thread for those of us that like to toss out a point-of-view every now and then.

So...

The Dixie Chicks? Exactly as shitty as I expected. "Goodbye Earl" is as retarded in its politics as its production decisions. The best thing that can be said about these girls is that they're not quite as slick as Shania Twain - but "not quite as slick" is a long way from "not slick". This is just glossy mainstream piffle with less depth than the makeup on the fat one's face. Fuck 'em. Fuck 'em with power tools AND an impressive array of hunting knives.

Def Leppard? You can't have it both ways. If you defend Def Leppard you MUST defend Bon Jovi as well - it's the exact same template. Except with mullets.

How about one that we expected to be good but turned out to be shitty?

Neil Diamond - Twelve Songs

Generally favorable reviews (excepting Pitchfork). I don't know what I expected, but with Rick Rubin as producer, I thought it would be interesting. Its not.

At least he's only singing his own material. I'm guessing that he would have done standards if Rodney Stewart hadn't beaten him to it.

This is not factual. Knowing where that comment leads with Mr Cliff, however, it will be the last from me bout them in this thread.

If you're talking about early Bon Jovi, circa 7800 Fahrenheit, then I wouldn't disagree with you, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi have quite similar sounds and tendencies i.e. the same template. Anthemic, arena, fist pumping, sing along type tunes. I can't say I ever liked Bon Jovi, though. Just a subjective preference. BUT, as Bon Jovi progressed throughout the 80s and into the 90s, they definitely took on more of a maudlin tone, becoming more known for their ballads, like 'Bed of Roses' whereas Def Leppard continued their 'let's RAWK' theme. I personally prefer the latter as opposed to the former. I don't think I have to defend Bon Jovi because they might be part of a genre of music that I generally like though. That seems like a draconian rule.

Is the disdain of metal about the music or is it the type of people you typically associate with it, i.e. those with mullets. I suspect it's as much to do with one or the other based on your previous comments.

Yes, some people enjoy rappers who are actually literate.

Although I haven't heard them, I'd say from the talk on this board, the last couple Weezer albums are certainly shitty as expected.

Nope. I've been known to defend the mullet as a hairstyle - but I've never defended Def Leppard or Bon Jovi as music.

Y'know, you're allowed to like SHIT - I like a lot of stuff that's pretty shitty (the Donnas immediately spring to mind) - but just admit that it's shit. It's unnecessary to critically contort yourself to discern the difference between Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer". They're both big, dumb, soundalike pieces of mainstream cack.

Mike Jones? Not a fan but I'd rather listen to that than some dude making rap sountracks to cartoons.

That's hardly his best album.

But that's just it, I don't think it's shit. Shit implies it's without value and is meritless and I just don't feel that way. I don't try to intellectualize my love of big, dumb metal bands either, if I like it, I like it I'm not going to search for reasons. But I do see differences between the songs you're quoting there. Thematically, they're different and that does mean something as to why I would enjoy the former song listed versus the latter. I do think that your explicit use of the word mainstream as if it's a dirty word speaks to a certain degree of prejudice, that on basic principles you shouldn't like it because of that association.

I suppose I feel the same way about most R&B that you do about metal. I generally think it sounds the same musically and lyrically. However, I won't hate something on principle because it came from a genre that I generally don't enjoy or because I should hate it for some hip reason. If you're looking for basic admittance from parts of the collective Obnish that they like music that is not objectively good by some metric of validity which classifies some music as "superior" and others "inferior", I suspect that it won't be forthcoming.
