i haven't heard the spiritualized song, but i'll agree that the rest is on the mark. additionally, i'd add primal scream's "some velvet morning."

and, while it is certainly debatable whether it is undeniably better than the original, dwight yoakam's "i want you to want me" is amazing. he keeps the general feel of the song, but adds a few things that i can't explain and it comes off tremendously.

<=== has always been partial to Marc Riley's cover of "Baby's On Fire". Riley's breathless whisper is way more effective than Eno's nasally vox.

Hold on Captain Indy...they are unabashed liberals AND working witH Rick Rubin for their new album...and you realy can't fuck with "Goodbye Earl."

They are good for what they are, and I suspect many around here won't admit it, but do feel the same way.

This is the most meaningless of praise. I took an excellent crap the other day, but I'm not starting threads about it.

Daystar might ;)

I mean, if you are inclined to like modern country, they are good.

I know that you can't imagine how those in "Red States" live without Cardigans, Soy Lattes, and indie rock, but it is possible.

Whatever man. I'm sure that deep down, you think you listen to My Morning Jacket more than the Dixie Chicks because you have better taste than most of the population, but if you want to make this about your ridiculous perceptions of me (though you're the one who's always protesting that your online critics don't know you), that's your prerogative.

Haq-y Baby,
If I in fact DO listen to MMJ more than the Dixie Chicks its cos I like em better.

And I know you don't really wear cardigans, drink soy lattes, or stare thoughtfully into the distance looking like the weight of the world is troubling your too big mind....and don't really even think you're a liberal, but I do think its funny that most people round here do, just cos I berate you for it all the time ;)

Your Friend,
Senator LooGAR

How do we get to page four without any mention of Big Star's cover of "Femme Fatale"?

The Sister Lovers version is 100x better than the original shat out by that German Shemale, Nico.

Not yet. I d/l/d it and then had to drive 2.5 hrs back to Montgomery. Will give it a whirl in a few here.

I prefer Fiona Apple's version of The Beatles' "Across the Universe."

I will also give shout outs to:

Red House Painters, "I'm Sorry" [John Denver]
Faith No More, "I Started A Joke" [Bee Gees]
Aretha Franklin, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" [Simon & Douchefunnel]

Aretha's not really fair though. Neither is Elvis. Two honorable mentions for awesome covers of songs so damn good that it's really hard to pass them up:

The Feelies, "Paint It Black" [Stones]
Staples Singers, "The Weight" [The Band]

On that note, I prefer Half Cousin's version of The Beatles' Girl.

I like Feist's cover of The Bee Gees' "Inside and Out." But then again, I've never heard The Bee Gees version I don't think....

I guess it's sacrilege, but I like The (English) Beat's version of Tears of A Clown as much as I do Smokey's

My pat answer: The Dickies - "Nights in White Satin"

Aztec Camera's version of "Jump" is waaayyy better than Van Halen's

How about The Futurehead's "Hounds of Love" v. Kate Bush's

More sacrilege: Oyster Band's "Love Vigilantes"

I like Clapton's take on "Cocaine" better than J.J. Cale's

I prefer Yellowman's version of "Country Roads" to John Denver's

I've never heard a Dylan version of "My Back Pages" but I can't imagine it could be better than The Byrds.

I've also never heard Nick Lowe's "What's So Funny 'bout Peace Love & Understanding" but ECs version is among my favorite of his songs.

I think I prefer Barenaked Ladies version of "Lovers in a Dangerous Time", but it's real close.

The Jayhawks own Grand Funk's "Bad Time"

The Cowboy junkies do a great job with "Sweet Jane", tough to call it undeniably better, though.

Jennifer Warnes - "Bird on a Wire"

Others that are very good, but not better than the original...

The Feelies - "Paint it Black" & "Everybody's Got Something to Hide..."
Siouxsie & the Banshees - "Dear Prudence"
Galaxie 500 - "Isn't It A Pity" & "Ceremony"
