I actually used to half-defend you to katie, but that was long, long ago.

You could tell the same story this way:

New band emerges
The people who seek out this type of band listen, and most like them
They get written up a lot
The people who wouldn't go out of their way to hear this kind of music now give it a shot because so many people are talking about it
They listen. They still don't like this kind of music.
There are a bunch of threads, and they're of the impression that negative comments are also welcomed, so they give their opinion.
They're accused of backlash.

And your example 2 doesn't illustrate your point. I don't like the accents or fans of Norwegian metal, but it's not even popular.

I think this is pretty accurate, but it does miss one other factor: people get infatuated with new things because they're new, and then they fade away as they get more familiar because they have little to offer in the long-term. My favorite example of the past year+: Arcade Fire. I checked 'em out, listened a half-dozen times and found that with each listen I just plain grew more and more bored with them. And I like a lot of the music that they obviously draw inspiration from. I just ended up not finding them all that interesting. It had nothing to do with popularity.

In the big scheme of things, most of these bands that we're arguing about being "popular" hardly even register on the radar screens of real popular music.

Oh, I understand what you're talking about completely. I would say that I know as much about THEM as you do, it's just that I suspect that your attitude is less about US vs THEM, as it is those who agree vs. disagree with you.

You need to make that exact same post in the "Exactly As Shitty As You Expected" thread - it'll make peoples' heads explode.

Some day somebody’s gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye
Until then baby are you going to let them
Hold you down and make you cry
Don’t you know?
Don’t you know things can change
Things’ll go your way
If you hold on for one more day
Can you hold on for one more day
Things’ll go your way
Hold on for one more day

Thanks, pumachik!

Now, let's all consider Wilson/Phillips for a second in the context of this argument. It's breezy, well-constructed pop that sold shitloads - so all you anti-elitism types should be falling all over yourselves to claim it as great music, right? And, conversely, I don't like it simply because it was popular.

My sympathies. Every time I hear that song I think back to summer camp in 1989 when that song was HUGE and you couldn't escape it.[quote]

Shit like that makes it justifiable to come to work brandishing a shotgun.
Best of luck.

To what end, obner? To what end. Will radcliffe become somehow tolerant of other peoples likes? Will Loog ever reverse course or apoligize? Will Haq ever lose face? Seems like a big ol' circle.

The fat one from Wilson Phillips was a Brian Wilson bathrobe assbirth. Saw it on the E! Channel last Tuesday.

I get you, but deciding what's bad music is like the SCOTUS' view on what constitutes porn; "I can't define it, but I know it when I see/hear it."

I know, and I'm sure Dri will affirm, that popular or no Wilson Phillips are bad at music.

I always thought the blonde chick thought too highly of herself, and thus wrote them off because I think she's a bitch. ;)

I don't like it because it isn't the type of music I enjoy but I'll acknowledge that it's well constructed with breezy harmonies. Because I don't enjoy the music should not necessitate me HATING it and HATING those who enjoy it. If people buy shitloads of it, who cares?

And remember that I enjoy shitty pop-metal, not shitty pop.

Seems there's a bunch of people who loved Def Leppard back when they were twelve years old. So how about including a list of all the movies, books, and TV shows you liked back then too - because I'm sure they're all equally great.

I did. You called it all shit and implied that I've failed to mature. Nice take.

Key phrase here is "when you were twelve".
