Or as I'm fond of saying - "there's 2 kinds of music...good, & bad" .

ME. Not defending them per se, but kinda like Jimmy Buffett, I am of a mind that if you can't kick backl and rock out to some open mainstream boolshit sometimes, you are probably trying to hard to be cool....oh god this leads me back to the argument with haq.

I guess I'm of a like mind, clearly I don't have a problem with a lot of stuff that people genuinely hate, but I've never liked Bon Jovi. Well, except for that one with porn in the beginning of it. I think it's called Social Disease.

I agree with the basic premise of what you're saying. I don't listen to Buffett that often but I do own a few albums and wouldn't trade any of them in. I also still dig Sublime who I'd assume most people here don't like. What I don't agree with is the idea that if you don't care for this particular openly mainstream band, then you're being too cool for school. Making that kind of presumption based on someone liking or not liking one band -- which a lot of people around here seem to do -- is bs.

Shouldn't it work both ways then?

Sure it works both ways. I don't really believe in generalizations. That said, if you don't agree with me on everything, you're opening yourself to criticism.

I'll just add:

I liked hair metal (and whatever other metal) back in the 80's. Some of it I still like but listening to some of it now, I see how juvenile some of the lyrics were. I like a few Bon Jovi songs but I probably wouldn't buy one of their albums since I can just download the songs I like and I don't think their albums were all that great as a whole. I like Def Leppard and would probably buy Pyromania, High & Dry and Hysteria but they're not high on my list of albums to pick up right now. Aldo Nova...I like Fantasy but haven't really heard anything else by him.

I think Spoon are a good example of a band that has gotten better as they've increased in popularity. My enjoyment of The White Stripes has increased as they've gotten more popular. I liked Get Behind Me Satan a lot but it didn't make my list because there were 20 other albums I liked more, not because "oh they're too big now and my list has to be indie as fuck". I don't like the Strokes not because they've gotten more popular but because I don't think their later albums are as consistently as good as Is This It.

I'm sure someone will say my taste sucks or something similar but hey, it's mine.
