The potential is there for this weekend's show. Host Steve Martin with musical guest Prince. If they can't at least put together a respectable show with this lineup, I doubt that they ever will again.

Thoughts?

It's just a shitty cast. It's not like it hasn't happened before.

Nah, SNL is just in one of its down cycles. It always bounces back. They're on the right track with those three guys they brought on as featured players. The main problem now is that there are numerous cast members who've been on there for going on 10 years (if not more): Sanz, Hammond and Parnell. The Tim Meadows lifetime appointment was supposed to be the exception, people, NOT the rule!!!

Sanz is the unfunniest human being alive.

The strange part about Tim Meadows is he didn't get funny untill like year 7 or 8.

how many times has this thread come up?

"snl" usually has one good sketch every week. i think the dane cook episode was the season's best so far. steve martin hasn't hosted in many years and i'm not sure how well he'll gel with the current cast. i'll still watch it from the tivo.

you can't expect an excellent episode every week ever again. once you realize that fact, the show is actually tolerable some of the time. and it's occasionally even funny. (see: TACO TOWN, a-holes buying a christmas tree, and the overrated "chronic-WHAT-les of narnia.")

I don't get the popularity of this guy. He just isn't funny.

so you watch tv for an hour and a half for 1 good sketch?

I think Steve Martin has been pretty funny in most of the stuff he has done. Maybe he can teach these kids a thing or 2 during the week.

I would agree that the writing is probably 80% to blame for the current suckitude of SNL. With a couple of exceptions, the cast is actually pretty good. Kenan is being woefully underutilized, for one. Perhaps they should add Kel to the cast...

no. i watch the first minute of a sketch and then make a call: either watching it through or fast-forwarding. watching tivo'd "snl" takes 20 minutes, tops. (unless the music guest is worthwhile, then it's maybe 25.)

Yeah, that's the best way to watch it the past couple of years.

I said it in another thread and I'll keep on saying it; get Chappelle to write/co-produce and host the episode right before his truncated season of Chappelle's Show starts on Comedy Central and you've got magic.

As for this season, I've liked it more than most in the recent past.
Dane Cook was good, Jack Black was great, Digital Shorts have been consistently funny and some hosts you'd think would tank (Longoria especially) pulled it off. SNL is the easiest punching bag in show business (justafiably in most cases) and no one should be surprised/bothered anymore when it swings and misses far more than it hits.

She has tits. And they aren't hairy like Horatio's, so it's all good.

You know I've never seen so much as a second of SNL but the episode of Kenan and Kel where Kel hids in the girls room under a pile of teddy bears was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

i thnk the show has swung back in the right direction.

the should have ditched everyone and started from scratch (like they do every once in a while) but all the new young people are funny and are slowly taking over the show.

I still enjoy it. I wasn't around for the Belushi era when it first aired, and I didn't really watch even during the Myers/Carvey era but I've seen repeats.

The couple of new guys are good, though that new girl who plays the cashier at Target reaches Mad TV-levels of annoyance.

Horatio Sanz can be dropped immediately. He's not funny and he can't get though two lines without laughing. Maya Rudolph can be dropped as soon as she returns.

Amy Poehler, Fred Armisen, and Will Forte still pull it off every week.

The thing I've just noticed lately is how blatant they are about reading from the cue cards. When you're only doing a couple minutes of dialogue a show, you'd think you could memorize the lines. Half the time, it looks like they're standing there reading. I expect that from the hosts, but come on.

I think the show is still funny. That "Deep House Dish" sketch is fucking funny. I think that Weekend Update is still consistently solid (although that Drew Barymore bit was lame)
