Couldn't be worse than half the shit that comes out of Hollywood. Guy Pearce could be a blessing or curse, most likely the latter considering his soon-to-be Andy Warhol role.

This came out about 3 months ago in Australia (for once we get something earlier!), and i even made a thread about it. It is the best movie of the year, easily, and one of the best new movies i have seen in a long long time.

I was particularly fond of it because there has never been a film which has even tried to capture the region (North Queensland) in which i live so perfectly: the drought, the heat, the flies, the rotting carcasses of cattle too dehydrated to survive. The soundtrack is killer as well, done by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis. It's a trifle violent, but not unnecessarily so. Anyone with even a passing interest in Nick Cave would really enjoy it, and even if you don't care much for him, its still a great film. I think it's better than Hillcoat and Cave's fantastic last collaboration, in which Cave cameo'd, Ghosts...Of the Civil Dead.

Also, the settlers' interaction with the native Aborigines is significant because never before has this issue been dealt with in film or in any form whatsoever. The Proposition shows Aborigines any many sides of the law, which was actually the case as opposed to the usual -- false -- representation of them merely being 'culled' by the white people.

certainly not.

This film just works for me on many levels:

-It's Australian.
-It was shot near where i live (yeah so what, some of you live in LA, but for a movie to be made North of Sydney in Australia is an extreme rarity, not to mention 2000 km North).
-Nick Cave.
-Warren Ellis
-John Hillcoat.
-I love Westerns.
-The soundtrack is fucking awesome.
-The movie is fucking awesome.

So this won't work as a tourist lure, as such? "Come out to North Queensland, have a fucking godawful time."

Gotta get this soundtrack.

I liked his novel And the Ass Saw the Angel -- very Faulkner-esque, colorful -- so yeah, that is something to look forward to. I've never seen Ghosts of the Civil Dead also directed by Hillcoat -- 'tis on my list.

I don't get this quote from the Dark Horizons link posted above:

Nick Cave, the somewhat 'darker twisted Aussie cousin of sorts' to Jeff Buckley - at least music style wise, is behind the script for a new film...

Erm...that doesn't jive...Jeff Buckley? (and I like me some Nick and Jeff, mind)

Nick was doing music when Jeff was still a toddler. They are not musical cousins. Nick is more akin to Morrison if Tom Waits had taken him to a whorehouse to lose his viginity.

precisely, but its beautiful in its serene desolation. Just so freakin' hot. The temperature in the day while they were filming reached over 54 degrees celsius.

[EDIT:] that's precisely 130 degrees F.

when are you guys gonna metricate yourselves anyway? Builders use metric, scientists use metric...doesn't it just make sense?

I say you guys should just phase it in, like how my high school phased in a new uniform a couple of years ago. But then again, you guys don't have uniforms at school, do you...

Don't worry, neither do we. But our great leader won't let it be impedimated by foreign metricians.

We're America. We'll never come to you. You'll come to us. Even if the other way is better.

We wearuniforms here (where I live). We also learn the metric system but forget it as quickly as possible.

I thought it was the comic book writer Warren Ellis until I checked on Wikipedia.
