Then why do "we" like such crap?

Do you mean the Obner majority? I wouldn't call most of it "crap", but I just have a hard time understanding how so many can consistently get excited about the same kind of thing done over and over. I don't think most of those albums in the top 20 are all that unique, special, or interesting, but I don't think most of them are bad.

On a separate note, I'm kinda surprised/disappointed that Franz Ferdinand didn't make it. Of all of the popular indie albums that I listened to no more than 3 times (MMJ, Spoon, CYHSY, Wolf Parade, New Pornos), it was probably my favorite. It prompted me to go back and listen to the first album more

and gain a new appreciation of it.

It is interesting to me as well, because I am always accused of having "Conventional" tastes, yet I had 4 of these in my top 20.

and FUCK EDAN, Y'all honks should get hip to that JEEZY!!

true...I like the negative reviews but someone must like these albums and its a bit strange to hear mostly negative comments about the list. I've only heard about 25% of the list. I don't feel like I'm missing anything, but it would be nice to hear folks who voted for these make the case for 'em.

Apparently, I've 74'ed the shmoo poll thead. I didn't think that was possible this early. Sorry everyone.

Do you mean the blurbs or the people bitching about the list?

People are never happy with these things, but I'm not complaining. It pretty much turned out like I expected. I was holding out a little hope for Deerhoof, Smog, and the Silver Jews, and they weren't far off. From seeing everyone else's lists beforehand, I knew most of the stuff on mine wouldn't make it.

Anyway, I don't see your point. Is it just a general lack of enthusiasm expressed towards these albums that helps "fuel the argument"? The only people really expressing negative opinions are just the ones you'd expect to, the people who voted for completely different stuff.

hell, I forgot to. I kept pushing it to the deadline and then it kinda came and went. woops.

But to answer to FT and Billy, if I had voted I would have had the Josh Rouse and Ryan Adams up in the top 5.

You could have made the change that would have propelled Josh Rouse into the top 20. Shame on you. :P

i'll counter this statement and say thank you to jen for abstaining. i would've been pretty disappointed if the national hadn't been in the top 20.

Just a thought....but maybe next year we submit our top 10 picks?

I'm poor, and am lucky if I buy 20 albums in a year, much less NEW albums. A top 20 is just too hard to work with. Everyone should submit a top 10, and then cull 20 from those votes.

I think we might get more than 100 voters that way, and perhaps would have a more representative sample of what people consider 'quality'.

I still woulnd't like Spoon much though.

Hmm....I guess I didn't read the poll instructions very well then. I'll have to take a look at it to get a better idea of whats going on. It still sounds like some part of the process is producing non-representative results, which is fine and all. Maybe thats the way the Schmoo has always been.
