As already indicated, I was awfully excited to hear this after reading about it for so long. It was detailed a lot in
Shakey. Anyway, I think this is a fantastic record for fans of Neil. I'm kind of disappointed that he hasn't officially released this because it really is amazing. I see why this is part of his so-called LA series as
Time Fades Away,
Tonight's the Night and
On the Beach are all musically and lyrically similar; I think it resembles
Tonight's the Night a bit more so, as Nils' piano is fairly prominent throughout, and even certain songs like "LA" could be a companion to "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown". A couple of my favourites would be "Time Fades Away" which has a rollicking kind of stomp which somehow does not bely the lyrics about 14 junkies and "Journey Through the Past" which is kind of sad and melancholy in the same manner as "Tired Eyes". Thematically, this song might be most representative, as over the album he sings a lot about being in Canada, hanging around Winnipeg (in "Don't Be Denied"); Looking back is a common theme. "Last Dance" closes the album and opens with:
Wake up! It's a Monday morning
No time left to say goodbye
Can't breathe
and the lights are changing.
You can live your own life
Making it happen
Working on your own time
Laid back and laughin'
Oh no, oh no...
The whole album is pretty raw and loose as any live album should be. I'm on my second listen right now and it's even better. I don't think there is a weak track on here. I hope this eventually does get released once his mythical vaults get opened because it deserves a public place with his best 70s work.
Thanks again to Natural Mike for sharing this.
