You know, I just watched that movie "The Laramie Project" this weekend, re: the Matthew Shepard death, and it's amazing how many people do feel this way. As for the hatchet-guy, well, I'd like to think what goes around comes around.

The only arguable reason for disagreeing with homosexuality is to have a religious objection - if you believe that God proscribed certain behavior, then you likely think it's wrong regardless of its social effect. Another example would be adultery - you could craft a scenario in which adultery did no obvious harm to any one party and contributed to the wellbeing of another's (Pareto-efficient adultery, for the law nerds playing at home), but if you believe that the 10 Commandments are absolute moral truth, then you still consider that act of adultery wrong.

Trying to argue without appeal to religious authority that homosexuality is wrong would put you on pretty thin ice.

Well there's social homophobia, and there's personal homophobia. To me, since I don't "get" homosexuality, I almost have to admit to being homophobic in as far as myself is concerned. I couldn't care less what anyone else does, but if/when people ask me why I haven't tried it (and they do -- I have several gay friends), I don't really have an answer, other than it's "icky". No religious undertones whatsoever; probably has more to do with my upbringing and latent heterosexuality.

I think what most people mean when they talk about homophobia is social homophobia, but when someone is being overtly homophobic, the lines get grayer, because the way a lot of people deal with situations is by putting themselves in the other's place.

My 'disagreement' does come from religious overtones, as well as the "icky" that Dusty mentioned. I honestly don't intend to interfere with or distance myself from anyone that is homosexual based simply on the fact that they are. My comments are most just reactionary to the amount of homosexual content that comes up on the board. Nothing else. I probably come across, and it's my fault, much more beligerant towards homosexuals than I am. I guess bottom line is I just get tired of hearing about it in every other thread. I apologize to any I offended. I was just writing off the cuff. My feelings are what they are, though.

My biggest issue with you is the fact that you've changed your attitude towards me since you found out I was gay. It's not only you, there's a few others on this board that have done the same thing (a couple of them I had even met in person and had a wonderful time with). I just think it's a shame that you would allow it to influence a potential friendship.
