What do you go by on when to change your oil ? My car was due to have the oil changed in Jan., but I'm about 900 miles away from the 3,000 mark since it was changed...I'd like to wait and have it changed when I have it in next month for inspection, but I also don't want to f my engine up...I drive maybe twice a week, and those are just for short store trips etc..I basically walk to work everyday...

I change mine every 5,000 miles. Haven't had a problem yet.

I think you'll be fine; that time thing is really just remind people who drive a lot and since I suspect that a goodly portion of people cant even read their Odometers.

I change mine every 5,000 miles as well like bullee but I drive a fairly new vehicle.

3000 miles and/or 3 months isn't a hard and fast rule. I think it's something propagated by oil change companies to get you to change your oil more.

I use synthetic oil and get it changed about once per year. I only drive about 6000 - 8000 miles per year though. I'd probably get it changed after 10,000 if I did that within a year's time.

I just let my truck tell me. All new Hondas have an oil-life meter that is based on how you drive, environment, etc. When the oil-life gets down to 15%, a notice comes on your dashboard urging you to take it in and get it changed.

But I'm just showing off.

To answer your question, it depends on your driving habits and environment. Lots of stop and go traffic, you should probably have it changed when they say to change it. Live in a dirty environment, do the same. Otherwise you're probably fine waiting til at least 5000 miles, and probably more like 7500.

I don't change my oil. I let it burn up and add fresh clean quarts.

Edit: Screw you Iraq! I'll show you how to conserve oil!

Cool..Thanks peeps..I think I'll wait for the inspection next month...I'll most likely only drive my car 10 times in the next month, if that..So it seems like I can wait..I just tend to skitz over shit like that..

A lot depends on use and age of the engine (i.e. how much are you burning/leaking). If you tend to put heavy loads on the engine (hauling stuff, steep inclines, hard acceleration, etc.) change more often. Keep on top of the level (that's why there's a dipstick), especially *after* you change the oil (to make sure they sealed everything properly and didn't leave anything leaking).

Timmyjoe's method is somewhat reliable. I know it's time to add a quart when the engine stops dripping oil.

Oil leak? That ain't no oil leak, that's just sweat from making all that horsepower!

This is actually what the manuals suggest on most new cars. 3 mos. 3,000 is a sales job.

Mine is always the milage. That's what comes first.

With a new car/engine, you'll want to change after the first 1000 miles of break-in.

Definitely. I should have clarified.

I'm overly paranoid about frying my car due to neglect, so I subscribe to the "whichever comes first" school, with respect to the 3 mos./3,000 miles oil change schedule.

The single best thing you can do for the longevity of your car is to change your oil frequently. Frequently means every 3,000 miles -- so ignore those people that push it to 5,000 or 7,500.

That said, I disagree completely with the 3 months thing. I think that's more for people who leave their cars parked undriven for longer than a couple weeks. And if that's the case, you should start it up and drive it once in a while (maybe once/week, if possible; once/month, worst case).

So you, especially, should be fine waiting until the 3,000 mark, since you drive it regularly, albeit very little.

I change the oil in my Impala every 2,500 miles and use only Mobil 1 oil. But I baby that car. In my Buick, I think I'm way overdue for an oil change. I'm probably closing in on 4,000 miles.

Interesting thing with my Honda - you don't do this. First vehicle I've ever seen that specifically says not to do this. The first oil in the engine is a special formula, apparently, and Honda wants it in there for a specific amount of usage, then it gets changed out for normal oil. I'm at 3600 miles and 50% oil life, pretty cool.
