OK, so I'm 10 years behind on this movie...

I received the 10-year anniversary DVD of this as an early Xmas present and was quite blown away.

Opinions?

I loved the book, and the movie does it justice. A rarity for a Stephen King story.

Top ten for sure. Somehow considered a great "guy" movie which I never really got, though I dont know a lot of chicks who throw it out as highly rated as most guys do???

Excellent movie. One of those few instances where the celluloid version outdoes the written version.

I thought I was the last person to have seen this when I finally got around to seeing it just a couple months ago, so don't feel bad.

It's terrific.

What's amazing about the movie is that it never found an audience in the theatres. It only started to really get attention when it went to video.

Most emotionally over-wraught prison movie next to Green Mile? Yes
Do I watch it every time it comes on TNT? Absolutely

i watch it every time it's on tv too. if i'm just flipping through and randomly land on it, i'm there for the rest of the trip. great movie.

speaking of good prison movies, ya'll should check out Animal Factory, with Willem Dafoe, that kids from Terminator 2, and believe it or not, a very creepy role with Tom Arnold.

bort

oh yeah and is the special stuff on the 10th anniversary edition any good?

Excellent flick. I'm with the crowd that has watched it a ton on TNT and other cable outlets.

i would say that it is one of the best adaptations of a steven king work, but i am not sure that i agree that the movie is better than the short story. king's short stories are woefully underappreciated, imo.

If I stumble onto it on cable, I'm out of commission for a good three hours.

Other movies that do this to me; Ocean's 11 (2001 version), Blues Brothers, The Sandlot

As I said, great movie, but definitely a Hollywood prison.

With a few exceptions, what a friendly nice bunch of convicts.

What other prison could you play opera music and not have the cons shout-"Turn that punk ass shit off !"

But, wasn't it (the film, at least) a period piece, taking place from late forties to early sixties? In which case, couldn't the inmates have been a bit more cultured -- or, maybe better said, receptive to the high arts -- than are inmates today?

Besides, we all know that convicts in Maine are just a bunch of kittens, right? ;)

Or did they change the location for the film?

Loved this movie... it's what made me fall in love with Tim Robbins.

Chuck: Ditto on the Stephen King unappreciated short stories... "Stand by Me" was also taken from the same collection as "Shawshank Redemption" and it too was an excellent film.

As for prison life being depicted as "Hollywood," well, there was the time period, but don't forget that there were some violence/rape scenes in the movie as well. It wasn't all copacetic.

Man, you never cease to amaze me! But I shouldn't have expected any less. Who else could fully appreciate the genius of E. Buzz Miller?
