which one would be better?

SVA has rolling admissions so i'm going to apply.
Tuition is around 10 thousand. I talked to the miss new yorker art teacher at the center for art I attend, and she told me SVA is better than Pratt in her opinion.

So... has anyone on the board attended the School of Visual Arts in NY?
Help.

okay edit.
On collegeboard it says it's 21 thousand.

I read 10 thousand something on the website. Somebody is lying.

edit again:

college board added the room and board fees. so that's right.

I think Obner should pool our collective resources and buy you a Magic 8 Ball so you can manage your life.

shut the fuck up. I'm 17 and I don't know what the fuck i'm doing. This is my future, and i'm really excited and really scared. Give me a fucking break.

Some people are such cunts. I think you tend to forget i'm half your age.

I just read it's 10 thousand a semester.
I think I may rule this out now. Unless I get really good reviews of the school.

And since when was it a bad thing to get advice from people with experience in this situation before making a decision?

Come on now, cp... you had a whole thread of people congratulating you on getting accepted to Pratt... relax. I honestly don't know anything about SVA so I have no idea what to tell you.

Have you visited either? Which one would give you the best "out of classroom" experience? Is there stuff do to for cheap around it? What are the dorm/living situation like? How is their dining hall? Does it seem like the people who go there are tolerable?

just a few questions I would be asking. Also, while good in theory to ask people's opinions its you who are attending. What I had as a good experience at my school may have been hell for another. Experience things for yrself once in awhile. Not meant to be mean, but more of a lesson based on the cd and now this thread.

when it all comes down to it, i'm not going to think in my head "well flying rabbit said this.." and "chowgurt didn't like this" or "jewelssantana warned me of this".. you know? i can make decisions on my own, and that i will do. i just thought i'd ask if anyone had any thoughts.

and i've never heard of that paquito guy in my life and couldn't find anything to download on the internet. i'm so sorry for asking.

i've always said that asking for advice is getting idea of figuring out what percentage of people give you the answer you want to hear.

actually i haven't always said that.
i think this is the first time i've said that.

i don't know what i want to hear about htis though.

though the school actually costs 21 thousand, that's cheaper than the other schools i applied to..
pratt, corcoran.. well that's it. cooper union is 10 (supposed to be free) and vcu is a little over 10 or something.

i just want to go somewhere that would be good for me. the best art school i could possibly attend. i'm not sure of what that is yet.

the one i want to go above all is pratt.
but i'm not sure what the absolute best would be.

the quality of individual schools is overrated.
it's all what you put into it and how well you mesh with the profs and students.

i'm sure either one would be great.

I don't think people are raising the question on yr attempt to gain knowledge on a particular artist, but rather the fact that you asked whether if was worth spending $1 on it. In any event, here is my 2 cents to you on college picking.

First, I made a huge mistake when I chose Shepherd. I didn't look hard enough at the extracurricular activities as opposed to the academia. Colleges are colleges. They all teach, and while some do it better (and cost more) for the most part, if you pay attention and don't screw around too much you should be ok. I chose Shepherd really for 2 reasons: 1) I came from a small school and I wanted to continue that path and 2) it was far away enough from my parents that I could feel "out there" yet close enough if I wanted to see my friends. While good on the outset, this led to problems. Number 1 became a problem because Shepherd is a suitcase school--meaning people go home on the weekends. It sucks and because of this, the Program Board and the school refused to book anything worthwhile for weekends. Number 2 was stupid because after my freshman year I came home one time...xmas. Some people do go home all the time, but for me, it wasn't that big of a deal. All my shit was at school, so why did I want to pack up stuff for a weekend?

With all this being said, really scrutinize the outside stuff. This is where you'll spend most of yr time. Whether going to shops, or in yr dorm, having a radio show, etc. Check this stuff out. Also, do a sleep over if possible. Try to do it over a weekend so you can see what the party aspect is like.

Seriously, if you ignore these and just focus on academics, then yr college career will be wasted. Part of college is growing up, and becoming yr own person. Try as you might right now, you still live under a happy umbrella of mommy and daddy. College will make you wake up and go to class, finish that paper, etc, which might not be the case now.

a good example of how many random things determine your college experience:

i had to repeat a year of my graphic design program because they accept 70 people the first year and only 17 the second and i didn't make the cut the first time. I really wanted to be a designer so i repeated.

when i took it the first year i didn't mesh with any of the students and felt really lonely and did terrible work. The 2nd time i went through i met three of my best friends for life, was happy and did great work.

The Hare & Jewels have some good advice.

At the same time, it's likely you will end up pretty irritated with whichever you pick at some point or another. Nowhere is going to be remotely perfect, and it's going to be very hard to get a good grasp of the place without staying there for an extended time period--which you won't have until after you're there.

Just rely on your research and don't neglect instincts. You have them for a reason. Listen to your gut.

Also think about why you feel the need to go somewhere. Is it to impress people close to you that you feel have hindered your progress and/or don't take your dreams as seriously as you do, or is it where you geniunely feel that you can grow and begin to develop the talents that will serve you for many years to come?

Really delve into your motivations. Sometimes you don't do things for the reasons you think you do.

If you seek to interact with adults, consider comporting yourself like an adult.

I don't think you should go to either school. Do yourself a favor and enlist in the military until you mature enough to undertake such a momentous decision.

In the long run, it probably doesn't matter, because the signs all say you'll be dead from an ulcer by the age of 26.

I chose SVA because Pratt sounds like an English insult. That's pretty much the extent of my insight on this topic.

Yes, I went to SVA. And my experience is both completely out of date (1980-1984) and in the wrong department (Film).

SVA had a pretty half-assed film department back then; they took our money and built a real film school with it after we left. Most of my friend's from back then (all film students) would bad-mouth the place if you asked.

But SVA's art programs were always considered to be pretty good, so what the hell do I know? I can tell you that most of their facilities are just a step above a hole in the wall; don't know how Pratt fairs in that regard. Definitely tour the place if you can.
