you have the right to express yourself freely

other people have the right to react to that expression in whatever way (that includes hiring you) as long as it does not limit your freedom of expression,

I mean i wear some pretty offensive and/or dirty ripped clothes, but i realise that some people will have positive and negative responses to this.

Anybody seeing a contradiction there? Anybody?

i agree with all of this
just saying i think we should
TRY to sustain judgement of people
until we know them

or at least seperate your first impression
from your actions towards them
(unless they're coming at you with a knife, etc.)

and also, as i said before
i'd prefer work for a company
that did the same
and let me dress however

anyone checked out chris mars' artwork?
it kind of relates to all of this
subject matter-wise
not so much the dress code specifically
but more of putting labels on people
so that we don't have to deal with them sort of idea

I thought Chris Mars' stuff was about schizophrenia, partly in fact to a close relative who suffered from it.

I'm going to throw on Horseshoes and Hand Grenades today or tomorrow.

no, i'd probly tell you that you looked like a convicted molo and move on.

i had long hair for a long time but i know that you are 35+ and hanging on to that pony tail as a means to cope with your hairline but dude, face up.

yes - it developed from that
(it was his brother)

but then growing up in that atmosphere
witnessing how his brother was judged and labelled
he kind of pieced together
how it happens to everyone

example: waitress = dumb

and it expands from there quite a bit
i went to a show in mpls
it was incredible
kind of changed the way i interpret my own first impressions

No, he's right. You're basically judging a book by its cover, grandpa.

What are you going to do next, tell me to get a haircut?

im pretty sure you posted in this thread btw

You probably thought they looked like complete douchbags, and i thought the same thing. I judge people and i know it.

i happen to not care about tats at all , and piercings not much either, but other people judge tattoed/pierced people much as you judged those NJ guys as spiky haired brainless twats

so stop being such a hypocrite

Of course people are judged by appearance. to think otherwise is pretty naive.

Appearance and behavior is a learned language and we are taught from a young age to understand and recognize these visual cues.

If you want to say that you belong to the establishment, hegemonic crowd then you dress that way.

if you see yourself as a rebel and not bound by the constraints of the hegemonic crowd then you dress that way.

In effect if you don't understand why people misunderstand you and get the wrong impression, then you need to figure out what you are saying to them.

There are those that dress well and can play the dressing game but are real losers and more worthless than the guy next to him in dirty jeans but he got the job because he knew how to dress.

btw, this is NOT to say that it is wrong to dress down and have tats and peircings.

I dont know, there is prescription and then there just is common sense. Im not an old guy at all and like to think of myself as rather open-minded- but seeing people show up to work in their pajamas and flip flops just makes my jaw drop.

No one dresses anymore- its the asexual denim uniform of the masses..

What you do in your own time is fine, but as already said, if Im running the show, you will wear what I tell you to wear and if you are
the

" kind of guy
that wouldn't want to work for someone
that had that much control of my life
because it would negatively affect my self-respect"

then Id imagine I wont be seeing you in the real world anytime soon.

It's rather sad that asking someone not to bear their tits and dirty pajamas at work can be argued against today as "controlling one's life" - or that the policy makers are "parochial in their views on fashion". A line has to be drawn somewhere...and hopefully that line is drawn by people with an above average intelligence.

nah, I succumbed to the real world and dress accordingly, a nice perk however, is that when Im old enough, I wont have to live in a nursing home but can afford real care (or a gun in the mouth). And perhaps of more interest to you, I will still be able to contribute to federal taxes subsidizing your substandard living arrangments (and your meals of cat food).

Funniest part about this thread is that gars like chalk and haiku boy (good one, shiv) are judging the other people, not on appearance, but on what they are saying about other's appearance.

And I can guarangoddamntee you that if any of y'all met me, the first thing you would think is "He's Huge" -- sorry, fact of life. See, that was a first impression based SOLELY on appearance.

And if I told you that I am wearing a suit and tie today, you will assume some negative things about "working for the man." I think fu said it best: we're all hypocrites.

The idea here is that people are not only judging you (because I could give a fuck about that ) but more importantly the organization you work for based on your appearance.

DING!

And when you try to seperate people from massive amounts of money for a living, you might wanna look like you know what to do with it.
