Massive Attacks a mess when it comes to whos in the band and whos not - i mean Horace Andy has been on like all of them and hes not a member

Tricky was there from the beginning so i consider him a member. And yes, he haa one of the coolest voices ever.

my picks:

mezzanine
protection (i'm a sucka for tracey thorn)
blue lines

the soundtracks danny the dog & unleashed are for die-hards.

portishead:
dummy
roseland live nyc

and if you want to delve into tricky, go with maxinquaye. the track "hell is around the corner" uses the same beat as portishead's "glory box" but i like the hell is round the corner version a bit better.

p.s. I GET TO SEE MASSIVE ATTACK AT COACHELLA! (no i'm not excited at all.)

I have Tricky's "Premillenial Tension" somewhere, but jesus that brings up too many wierd memories.

Bien oui.

C'est bon. Je vai purchaser au jour d'hui...

I was just IMing with Yail about being so high in French class I couldn't remember English, but I'm totally gonna pick these up.

acheter (I can't remember the ASCII circumflex) and you need a <l'> object in front of it. "Je l'acheterai au jour d'hui."

Mezzanine is essential. Blue Lines was essential for its time and still sounds cool today. Proection is half brilliant. 100th Window...spotty.

Dave, i hope you have a mighty system to play Massive Attack on. it's a must. if you don't, you won't get the real feel for them.

turn it up, and you'll get all warm and fuzzy. nice.

Literal translation: I am going to buy today. So, yeah, i need "it" and the right verb, but you get my drift.

AND

My brother just AIMed both of these to me...I'll check em out.

There's some good stuff on Pre-Mill Tension, but Maxinquaye really is the tops. It's certainly the most "Massive" of his solo records.

Agreed on Hell is Around the Corner vs. Glory Box....man, such a great song.

I think you've probably had your fill of Massive advice (I concur on Mezzanine as the best, though the highs (heheh) on Blue and Protection are must-haves), but if you haven't already, definitely give a listen to some of DJ Shadow's earlier stuff (a good amount of which is on the Preemptive Strike comp). There's a healthy crossover in what he was doing on In/Flux, etc. that borrowed from and influenced the Bristol sound.

Also, the single for "teardrop" has a great b-side, Euro Zero Zero, that doesn't really fit in the flow of Mezz, but is certainly as good as any of those tracks. There's also a Portishead/Barrows mix of "Karmacoma" running around that I used to prefer to the album track, esp. when I was way into Portishead.

Only problem you might run into with Mezz is that a few tracks became very ubiquitous in the early part of the decade, showing up on countless soundtracks, commercials, etc. I think an element of overexposure has affected my enjoyment of those songs.

Yeah, so I could go on and on about these groups...probably one of my favorite eras in music history.

Also,
I've never heard Endtroducing

I ignored this type of music in the 1990s, for the most part. Had to be huge, and in the mood.

Great track, Liz Frasier, of The Cocteau Twins. Amazes me how in the context of an MA song you can understand everything she sings, but with The Cocteau Twins, I could never hope to understand word one.

I'm not sure, but I think that might be a remix of the song "Eurochild" from Protection. I used to have the (cassette) single but I don't remember exactly what's on it.

No one's mentioned dub yet. Someone talk authoritatively about dub in the context of Massive. Aside from the whole, you know, Mad Professor thing (which has some great moments).

I never considered Tricky a member, any more than say, Tracey Thorn or Liz Frasier.

They're all just guest vocalists.

Mushroom, Daddy G and 3D are Massive Attack, .

Officially that's how it reads. It's why the band is in so much debt since they have to pay guaranteed money to all the guest vocalist & producers. And it's also why they ain't all that live. They're a studio act.

Blue Lines is in my top 5 forever

Protection I think is good but when I listened the other day it showed a bit of dating. I now agree with most people that Mezzanine is better. But I still think Blue Lines is tops.

I'm going to make a trip hop orchestra, but with more attentiont o the orchestral arrangements than Live in Roseland.

like Sibelius/Shostakovitch meets Portishead/M.A.

Already working on this with the core jazz/pop/triphop group, and writing arrangements for 14 strings/7 horns/6 winds/2-3 percussionists.

It may never be performed live, but it will come out.

Mark my words.

It's a limited slip differential which distributes power equally to both the right and left tires. The '64 Skylark had a regular differential, which, anyone who's been stuck in the mud in Alabama knows, you step on the gas, one tire spins, the other tire does nothing.

If you weren't such a classic car head, i'd point out that anyone who's seen My Cousin Vinny would know this exact same fact.

By the way, when we gonna hang ouut again?

I'm playin house of blues on 2/20 opening for Incognito. You should bring the lady out.

You saw us at our worst right before our band leader went to rehab. he just got his 9 month chip at the invite only AA/NA meeting at the grammys, complete with Richard Starkey. you'd think that an invite only AA meeting would be in direct opposition to the anonymous portion of alcoholics/narcotics anonymous. Regardless, new album in may, some new songs, and a much more cohesive band. As cohesive as a jam band can get that is. If i get guest list, you and the lady are on it, I had mad fun at Durty Nellie's hangin with you.
